American Apparel soft porn

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or are American Apparel's online banner ads increasingly bordering on soft porn? I noticed this one earlier (granted, it was while reading the dos and dont's in Vice) and check out the second image. It's like her socks are going down on her...

The thing is, it made me think that maybe my girl might appreciate some American Apparel socks :)

Speaking of soft porn, here is an blurb about Dov Charney, the owner of AA, and his tendency to masturbate in front of random women.

http://www.jewlicious.com/index.php?p=77

"....Well, because Dov Charney likes to masturbate. A lot. In front of women. And female reporters. He also has no problem walking around nude or covered by just a small towel. He also likes taking pictures of his scantily clad models. Oh… and he’s slept with his employees. He’s pretty up front about his peculiar predilections - some of the articles reproduced on the American Apparel Web site reflect his unusual behavior. As far as I know, he’s never forced anyone to do anything they didn’t want to do. In interviews, his employees describe an employer who is somewhat unusual and a little manic but who is passionate about running an ethical AND successful business. Well ethical in so far as he treats his workers. Perhaps not so ethical with regards to potentially sticky sexual harassment situations."

I don't care, both the ads and the girls in them are hot. And name one clothing company / fashion house that doesn't use sex in their ads these days - from H&M (the billboards) to Gucci.

(By the way, what kind of a name is 'Dov'? Is it like 'dove'?)

True, but the AA ads seem to cross a line that a lot of others don't (outside of a Terry Richardson shot campaign / magazine spread maybe). Stuff looks like professionally shot porn pretending to be amature porn. Def. seems to work when it comes to shifting shitty overpriced t-shirts.

Israeli / Yiddish I reckon.

i love how unabashedly sleazy they are. they're not trying to be arty or come off as especially legitimate. it's literally all about kinda showing showing off the clothes and getting your attention, which is basically the same as any other ad campaign. since we all know about it, it seems to be working.

plus their shirts are soft.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you here. Have you ever seen an Abercrombie & Fitch ad, or Guess? Open up an issue of the FADER and you'll see 100 ads that are more sexualized than the AA ads. I also approve of the lifestyle being sold with AA. Instead of "I'm rich, slutty and I'm miserable, look at me pout with all my ambiguously gay male friends in the rain in some exotic location that you'll never see reproduced in your life," AA goes with women who could very well look like girls you've actually dated and seen what they look like the morning after with no make up on. They're on beds and couches and other places where you and your girlfriend would put those panties to good use. I dig.

Also, I disagree that AA shirts are bad for the price. They're my favorite blank T-Shirts, although Spruce is very nice as well.

1. This is going to sound weird, but I like the "rich, slutty, miserable, pouty look" -Then again, I work at A&F now, so my opinion doesn't have much weight here.

2. I don't know if you were alluding to Abercrombie's photo shoots- but they are all at the beach or in the woods- not exotic at all- photo2.jpg. I know the girls don't look as "average", but I found alot of the AA girls unattractive or nothing that special. Abercrombie, well, the girls never dissappoint :)

3. A&F's blank t's are my favorite (at $12.50) and look really great.

You're right...hadn't thought of either of those brands but they are pretty heavy handed with the use of blatently sexual content to sell. It's been a while since I've picked up a magazine that'd have much in the way of clothing ads, but I do remember a friend's gay roommate being very excited at the prospect of a new A&F cat. not too long ago.
