Mil Surp Modular Assault packs

dino might

Recommended Posts

saw a marine with one in the airport and thought they looked like they mean serious business. thinking about getting one for school, but no websites ive found really go into much description about the pockets and compartments and all that. so anyone here have any knowledge to share as far as their practicality as a school back pack goes?

looking for something along these lines:

those packs your showing are very durable and will work good for school books. they have versions with laptop compartments too. usually their is a hydration system where a camel back is included which is removable. the only thing i don't like about military style backpacks is the large belt strap that comes along with them. there designed so you can run in them so the strap supports your back. it gets in the way for me.

thanks a lot, i dont doubt the durability, and yeah, in real life the waist strap was pretty damn big, i was mabye planning on just cutting it off all together, i was mostly curious about the compartments and pockets in the thing, big and spacious main compartment? others work for other school type things? or are they specially designed to carry guns and shovels or whatever the hell the gi's need to carry around?

and the bottom, whats that like on the typical pack? what kind of reinforcement etc..

ha ha, no they aren't designed to carry guns or shovels (guns to kill, shovels to bury?) no, we carry our guns in our hands and the days of digging a hole to shit in are over, thanks to halliburton and kbr. they are designed to store MREs (meals ready to eat), shirts, socks, extra ammo (that's what the side pockets are for). the main compartment is plenty roomy. a normal assault packet is designed to carry 3-4 days worth of supplies (clothes, food, ammo). that's a lot of shit.

dino i find that for everyday use, you should find a pack that already has some external pockets (like the ones you showed above) or you should buy some pouches to begin with. it's a pain with mine to always have to open up the main compartment for a pencil or camera or something. and i'm too cheap to order more pouches right now.

also some of the larger packs (like the first one you have pictured) have clips to make everything tighter if your bag isn't fully filled. but those clips are really annoying to have to undo all the time.

prima yeah thats what i was thinking with the pockets and all, i was curious about supreme scatterweaves, or 19s, or whatever the fuck the bigger one is they have, but i havent been able to find any info on them that i didnt have to speak japanese for, plus they cost a good deal more, but any info on those too would be appreciated.

in the end, i need a large, sturdy versatile pack with lots of pockets

bump, any updates? dino, did you ever end up getting one?

i want to be able to carry 2/3 text books, and a change of clothes with nice compartments on the out side. high durrability and water resistant, and comfortable (ie colapsable)

You can find many on ebay. Just search "MOLLE PACK" and you'll find them. I agree the 3 day assult pack is way too big. Go for the medium or small pack. Thats my dilemma right now, small or medium. The 2nd and 3rd pictures listed go for about 45 shipped on the bay (BIN). *The auctions also list dimensions.

i havent yet, the school years just ending for me, so ill probably be ordering one soon for next school year, ill post up pistures and all that once i do, i dont know how collapsable most are though, ive read about some having like internal skeleton/frame type things in the back, so that might limit that, but i also think part of the purpose of those is comfortability, so its up to you

I think this is the actual pack I have. There's no tags or anything, hence my surprise. I picked it up for $35 with some minor damage (a couple parts that were replaced) at an army surplus store. It's main compartment is actually a bit deceptively small. It's still large enough to fit 2 textbooks and maybe a laptop though. All cinched up it feels pretty sturdy on my back. There's no internal frame, only stiff foam on the back. If anyone wants I could take some pictures later.

My Scatterweave carries 7 periods of textbooks in the main section, with 5 sizeable pockets on the outside. I can't imagine that you wouldn't be able to fit everything you're going to need into it, in addition to the fact that it feels like it's just about indestructable.

Curious as to what you meant by this, do companies sell like external pouches you can hang off of your back / attach? Sounds interesting, anymore info?

I have this one in black

MOLLE.C-126.jpg

Had it for about a year and half. The main compartment is kind of small, but you can definitely put your books and stuff in there. My only complaint is that the plastic grommets that attach the shoulder straps to the bag are kind of weak. Both of them broke on mine, but I replaced them with metal key rings and rigged up something sturdy. For $40 it's a great bag.

edit: Damn we're behind. Current US Military uses ILBE (Improved Load Bearing Equipment and actually made by Arc'teryx) and are currently phasing out MOLLE.

They also got it in Black, ACU Army, and this probably closest to a tanish... (I'm colorblind)
