RE: jeans labels. question

Here's a possibly dumb question about the history/intention of labels on certain jeans at the back right belt area (same as on 90% of all jeans). This concerns labels that do not have the sides sewn so that if you wanted to, you could run your belt underneath the label.

My question is: is this intentional? Is there a history associated with an older jeans brand where the intention was to have the wearer run their belt through it? If so, was this purely for aesthetic reasons (as i would guess)? Also, is it possibly to prevent label warpage after much washing (just a guess)?

Always been curious about it, just wondering if some of you denim nerds can shed light on this. or maybe it originated with trousers? I donno.

thanks
