here's an article posted by andre at styleforum:

read the article.

a reporter at the washington post tried an experiment. what would happen if you took one of the greatest violinists of our generation and had him play in a busy metro station in D.C. during rush hour?

read the whole thing, it's worth it.

im usually a pretty callous son of a bitch...but for some reason, reading this just really fucking destroyed me today. i dont know what to even call something like this except...fuck, i dont know...cultural entropy?

SoS, there were some highlights in the article, like the guy who watched in amazement for 3 minutes and the guy who stood there for 9 minutes. even the shoe shine lady who would have normally called the cops didn't because the guy was "pretty good." also, the 3 year old who just knew that he was seeing and hearing something special.

that violin playing, even with the crappy, compressed streamed audio recording was so beautiful it made me tear up.

begs the same question i asked amerikajinda--

would it have been different elsewhere? say london, or vienna, tokyo, berlin?

london - a few people would have stopped and watched.

vienna - many people would have stopped and watched

tokyo - everyone would have been waaay too busy to stop, it would have been worse than d.c.

berlin - dunno, never been.

spain - there would have been a crowd that camped out around him.

nyc - a small crowd would definitely have formed, i think--mostly tourists.
