Three Minutes of Happiness: The Instant Gratification Show

@ Re:Up's Selective Hearing Gallery, 828 G Street, Downtown San Diego

Curated by: Chako Suzuki & Nick Wilkinson

Ninety-nine cent stores are sneaky. Sure, the sign says, "NOTHING OVER 99 CENTS!" but you can always find something that breaks that golden rule. RE:UP won't do you like that. You'll walk into our Three Minutes of Happiness show and see that, unbelievably, every piece of art is only $150. Then you'll walk out with a little treasure in your paws because RE:UP wants to make it easy on you. Consider this show your "starter kit" to collecting art. It's sure to instantly satisfy your art craving and set your tired checkbook at ease.

Curators, Chako Suzuki and Nick Wilkinson, bring you oodles of work dealing with the concept of instant gratification from more than 30 hot artists. This will be your chance to buy work at a price you may never see again.

Opening Reception is Saturday, April 17 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm at 828 G Street in downtown San Diego. Private showings are available on April 10 - 16 (Please contact [email protected] or [email protected]). The show will run one month until, May 10, 2004.

About RE:UP: RE:UP is the only magazine entirely dedicated to the art, music, and fashion of the emerging international downtempo culture. As a product of the downtempo scene, this quarterly publication documents from within, presenting influential audio and visual artists through an innovatively designed format. Professional producers, visual artists, casual music fans, and fashion forward consumers all read RE:UP for insight into the downtempo landscape. The Selective Hearing Gallery is the RE:UP store front. By hosting monthly art shows, the Gallery serves as an extension to the artistry of the magazine. The goal of Selective Hearing (SHG) is to expose San Diego to art/artists from around the world. The gallery curates shows every month, and the store carries art books, magazine, music, prints, shirts and anything else that is relevant to what the magazine features.

Artist Bios:

Kaori Kasai is an artist-in-moving. She is currently staying in Vancouver B.C. (Canada). Using androgynous characters in her paintings, Kaori creates storyboards of short vignettes about kinship, alienation, emotional boundaries and our interactions with physical environments. Her works have been shown at Otsu (San Francisco), Just Be/Compound gallery (Portland, Oregon) and SOMARTS: Kearny Street Workshop at the Fourth Annual Apature group show (San Francisco). Website: www.kaorikasai.com

Jon Burgerman draws pictures; sometimes cute, occasionally scratchy and sporadically odd. Mixing up ephemeral sketchbook drawings with digital media, printmaking, and painting; these intermittently disparate forms are united by a fervent identity, handiwork, and often wry cynical humor. His work has been exhibited and published on LP covers for Charles Webster and Winding Road Records to tee shirts, mobile phone animations and posters for Levis, and featured in a diverse range of magazines and books which includes Dazed and Confused, Sleazenation, Pictoplasma, Stick ‘Em Up, Computer Arts, Faesthetic, Half Empty Magazine, and This Is A Magazi
