What's everyone's opinion on linin button up/dress shirts for summer wear? I just purchsed one that I like, but to me it seems that not everyone is a fan.

linen is a summer classic! like mentioned, learn to love the wrinkles/slubs/weave variations as that is part of the natural character of the fabric...

i saw a pair of white rl purple label linen pants go for 80 on ebay a few days go... they're like $225 retail. they were pleated dress pants tho, IMO more formal than what you're looking for if you want a more laid back summery fit...

Nothing wrong with linen at all. I just bought a slim fit, long-sleeve line button-up from Ralph Lauren last week...........great for summer.

i'm still struggling with the idea of 'slim fit' linen shirts- have been thinking of tailoring one for a while now. the whole casualness of the linen shirt lies in its (more) shapless silouette and how it clings loosely to the body. doesn't a 'slim fitting' (restricting) linen shirt contradict that? how does it look england?

Slim fit doesn't necessarily mean restricting. It's not about sizing down on normal sizes as the shirt itself being cut properly so it does hang off the body right instead of just being a shapeless box. I'll have to give RL a look then. I'm intersted in some linen this summer.

When I think of a looser, flowy summer shirt, a short sleeve Hawaiian shirt comes to mind :P

It isn't 'slim' in the sense that it hugs your body uncomfortably, but rather, it has a bit more of a contoured shape that compliments your figure. The fabric itself breathes well, which is the advantage of wearing it. I know what you mean though; I like looser ones with the sleeves rolled up for casuals as well. Difference is that with this one, I can sport it with slim jeans/khakis, etc. and it still keeps me cool.

Mine is a little looser than this one (from the RL site):
