Rio

Josh,

Try Rio Sul mall in downtown Rio. I think the area is called Botafogo. It's barely a mile or two thru the tunnel from Copacabana/Leme but don't attempt to walk as it's dangerous (crime)

Barra de Tijuca - the best shopping mall in Rio and biggest in South America. It's a 15min taxi ride away

The stores in Ipanema are worth a look.

I've found that there are some beautiful things to buy in Brazil but watch for the quality. It won't be as high as Europe and North America. Furniture is a good purchase as Brazilian mahogany is renowned

Beach/surf wear is definitely the way to go in Rio. Osklen is a groovy Brazilian label. Nice designs but shame about the quality. They and most of the other surf stores occupy the top floor of the Rio Sul mall. The Cariocas say the best shopping is to be had at Barra de Tijuca.

You'll see Havianas sold everywhere for less than £2. They go for £20+ in London.

Be sure to dress down in Rio as you don't want to attract attention to yourself. Posto 9 in Ipanema has the most beautiful people - it's packed on the weekends, especially Sunday.
