The new gig etiquette?

Has anybody else noticed how strange going to see a band is now? I went to a gig the other day in a fairly small venue and saw no dancing. What I did see though made me feel very fucking old indeed. The first three or four rows seemed to be entirely occupied by people holding their mobile phones aloft watching the gig through the viewer. What the blazes is going on in the world when people pay good money to watch a live gig through 2 inches of pixellated plastic?

*Hear that clicking sound - that could have been my hip joint. Ooo me piles et al...

I guess there are two types of gig. the one you go to, dance/hurtotherpeopleinsomeformofapit like hell and leave all sweaty, exhausted and bruised but happy. and the one you go to, stand in awe at the band and appreciate the band.

or something.

basically it's the difference between going to see Clutch and going to see Deftones/Tool. for me anyway.

D, is there a big hardcore scene in Brighton? Aside from Brighton's other hardcore scene? I thought hardcore was pretty much dead in the UK - or at least all the ex-xxx kids have discovered the joys of ale and unsolicited sex. An acquaintance of mine once told me, with great pride and complete seriousness, how her boyfreind was one of only six remaining straightedgers in the UK - I laughed all the way to the bar.

When I witnessed the strange phone phenomenon it was at a Jamie T gig - he's been branded in the UK as a bit of a gadabout and so I was expecting a more excitable crowd. I just find it strange - to me it's a sad element of mass-media culture. There's probably an interesting dissertation in there somewhere if anyone wants it.

Since when was straight-edge and hardcore interrelated, especially in the UK?
