yeah i think that's what make their stuff so popular, the fact that people buying it want their life style, not just their clothes...

But I'm suprised, as someone who's in to minimal design etc, you dont like HF's stuff more, fade?

i like some of his stuff...i'm not too familiar with it other than what i've seen him wear in magazines. The Levi's fenom line i'm still puzzled as to what it's appeal is....but the cowboy shirt version of his distressed patchwork denim was cool. I'm a big fan of the hTm sneakers, id love a pair of the white snakeskin AF1's (but not the reseller prices).

BTW...what exactly is it about HF that makes him such a style icon that people are flocking to buy what he wears? Someone like Takuya Kimura i can understand...dude's a movie star. Don't get me wrong...i respect his hustle and his influence...but HF the man himself i mean. Lookin at pics of him in his men's non-no column, he doesn't particularly come off as that stylish of a guy, just pretty basic style.

Dont forget Nigo means "number 2" in English and if you dont already know, HF is number 1. HF was seriously influential in todays Harajuku scene, editing for the influential magazines, repping his take on style in the late `80s/early `90s in the street and in the magazines. He was originally just a normal kid who went to Harajuku every weekend, people admired his style and he became a celebrity.

Also style is different to good looks. Kimura or his stylist have seriously bad style but becuase SMAP is popular I think most Japanese guys want to dress to get the girls, they dress like him or some other idol. The hardcore fashion people dress like HF coz they aspire to be cool like him, not impress girls.

i'm not sure how long he has been into track bikes, but my friend out in LA had to deliver him this rediculous carbonfibre ganwell pro back in october while he was in SF.

Canice & others tell me HF`s dad was a Keirin rider (Fixed gear track bikes in Japan) so I guess he was down before anyone as usual.

Actually my friend here recently told me that Yoshifumi Egawa, who heads up Hectic in Japan, uses the late HF SR`s old saddle from racing.

I think I read in a complex mag interview it was 9 months, but that interview could have been old, or then again they could have just made it up... Wasn't judging, just pointing out how when he likes something he will just go ahead and get involved, I admire that.

sorry, fatlace interview... This said 7 months, but if his dad raced bikes, that probably had more to do with it...

I dunno. From reading mags like Ollie and Samurai the last couple of years while living in Japan it looks like the real pioneers of StreetxFixed Gears here at least were Recon/T19 and Hectic. It looks like HF got into it a little later as a hobby but could have been very knowledgeable on the technology and riding techniques from his dad already(?)

Yeah thats the thing about HF, he can do everything. He skates a pretty good half pipe for a middle aged dude too.

I just find it amazing that a person can parlay his hobbies and likes into such an influential and successful business. no matter what clothes he wears or what hobbies he picks up. To me, he is just a regular dude who made it doing things on his terms. And that inspires me more than anything else.

Yeah but I think that's what makes him a "style icon" he has the appearance of just doing what ever he wants, and not caring too much about fads, of course this may be a very deliberate look...

I like how he just gets into things and puts his own spin on it... eg. he likes snowbording, why not have his own snowboarding line (iDiom), he likes nikes, why not do his own interpretation (HTM) similarly levis (fenom) etc. he got into fixies, (apperently only 9months ago?) but has already had a go at a fragment design bike...

i just found out, HF's camera is 5000 USD..., but Tyro1 u r right.

he just doing what ever he wants..and so do his frd too..all the honeyee family..

I haven't heard of HF's father being a Keirin racer, but I don't doubt him knowing about the racing beforehand as its pretty ubiquitous over there. Its interesting how its held as a betting sport like horse racing without as much focus on the individuals as athletes.

Track bikes on the street is still relatively new over there as a fashionable thing. By law, you have to have a brake, so many use this clamp on brake that fits to the rear triangle for street riding as keirin bikes aren't drilled for brakes.
