Getting into Canada

You need a form of identification such as driver's license, or Passport, and if you are under 18 you NEED a parental consent document. We had an unbelievably huge hassle when we took the ferry from WA to Victoria, Canada a couple years ago as one of our friends was 17.

since yesterday (or the day before), you'll need a passport to make it back to the states if you are going by plane. other forms of transport (car, train, bus, ship), only an official ID will do. of course, it's much easier if you are driving cause they usually don't run any checks on the ppl in the car (only on the license plate). don't know if your questions is more related to documentation or if you have any reasons to believe you might not be permitted to enter (criminal record, etc), but keep in mind that some offence most customs don't care (ex: DUI) and Canada usually don't care for minor drug offense.

If you have a passport, use it. As others have mentioned, if you're flying to or from Canada, you'll need a passport, but all of the airlines are reminding travelers about this. If you're going by land or sea, you will not need a US passport for another year.

I live in Seattle and go up to Vancouver a couple of times a year. If you don't have a passport, other forms of legal ID like a birth certificate also help, but you'll need photo ID for sure.

Oh and when you come back to America and they ask you what you were doing there, definitely do not use the words "bar" or "club" or "concert." Stick to "shopping" and "site seeing!"

They don't care going in to Canada, but you NEED a passport coming back. Have fun waiting for 2 hours at the border if you go during peak hours. I've crossed that border many times, and US->Canada is always a bitch of a wait.

yup, last time i drove to nyc in the summer we had 3+ hour border waits there and back, it was lame

and the parental consent under 18 thing has been so strange for me, everyone has said its necessary but one of the people i drove to ny with this summer was 16 at the time and she had no trouble at all, same when i went to mexico when i was 17
