Finding a hostel in NYC

Good evening, I'm visiting NYC at the end of January and want to save my money so I can shop and eat, so I will be staying at a hostel instead of a hotel. No worries, I've stayed at hostels before and I like the atmosphere. The problem is that I've read good reviews about several hostels in the city so I don't really know which one to choose. I'm looking for a laid back affair with no curfew, decent security and most importantly a social atmosphere. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also any tips from locals about spots or restaurants that I should see that are off the beaten path would be great too!
