Can someone clearly explain "selvage denim"?

I hear this all the time, and have an idea of what it is.

But i know people around here are rediculosuly knowledgable and give me all the info.

I know this is very n00b, just trying to understand everything clearly

There are probably over 10 threads on this just from the past 6 months involving Selvedge denim and Selvedge information. Here is Nudies definition of Selvedge to give you more of an idea, but I highly recommend going through any threads from Ring Ring or Serge de Nimes,

Selvedge:

Old 28/29 inch shuttle looms produced denim where selvages were closed. Vintage Levi's jeans had a single red stripe along both selvages, Lee's had a blue/green along one, Wrangler's was yellow. When vintage shopping for jeanswear check jackets and jeans for selvages because they are a great clue to the real thing!

swoshmn, are your from niketalk? i used to visit there everyday but stopped because there's just oo much hype! don't hype selvage denim please (assuming that you post in the WDYWT thread...)

anyway, i recommend searching selvage denim and looking at all the old denim threads. hours of information on those old threads.

the bottom line: It is denim made with finished edges that dont have to be sewn up, as in self-edge. also called selvage/selvedge. get a nice turn up, and it CAN be better than regular denim.
