Breaking in leather boots

I just picked up a new pair of boots and honestly have no idea how to wear these down. They're already distressed so I don't have to worry about that, but the upper ankle area is very stiff and I need to wear it down so it goes slouchy. I've been contemplating throwing them in the washing machine, but I'm not sure if I really want to screw up the distressing in doing so.

Thoughts?

just wear them. the washing machine will destroy them.
