shrinking selvedge denim

How do you usually do it? I think i m just gonna let them soak in hot water in the bathtub. I don t really know how much they will shrink though. Any ideas?

10-20 minutes in a bath of warm water should do it. They may also shrink a tiny bit for the next 3 or 4 washes. Expect around 10% shrinkage on shrink-to-fit denim and less than 3% on sanforised denim.

hmmm...funny. tried soaking my pair in warm water, washed twice and it's still as large as ever!?

you can try dropping it in the dryer after soaking, rinsing and spinning. maybe that'll do cause them dryers shrunk my tees to a baby!

Sounds like yours are sanforized - ie the fabric is stabilised at the mill, so there's hardly any shrinkage after washing.

thanks RR! it's a LVC i got and the brown sticker/label didn't help and i'm stuck with the extras. a belt wont help as it's loopless unless i wear a suspender?? no way... but it's awesome right down to the fabric itself. no regrets.

How strange, I always thought all LVCs were shrink to fit (around 10% shrinkage), so I'd expected shrinkage on yours (if they were bought in a 'dry' state). Maybe your wash wasn't hot enough or long enough duration?

I tried shrinking my pants with just hot water - and letting them hang dry, but very little shrinkage occured. Would soaking in hot water and putting them in the dryer or just putting them in the dryer help in shrinking? Would putting them in the dryer affect the dye?

Yes, hot water + dryer will increase the shrinking process. Turn the jeans inside out before doing it and the effect on the dye will be minimal. (otherwise you'd lose some via abrasion if tumbled dried).

Yes, you just lose more indigo do to the abrasion as the jeans are tumbled, no biggie though. Turn them inside out though.

Why is everybody opposed to putting selvedge in the dryer? I did a quick search and could nt come up with anything, reason is - I m trying to shrink sanforized denim.

I throw my jeans in the dryer to shrink them, but not when they're wet. After they've stretched out from a week or two's worth of wear, I'll just throw em in for an hour on high heat to get them back to size.

my tip:

- let hot water in your tub. about 37.4 celsius

- wear your denim and keep your underwear on

- turn on the steve miller band cassette tape

- put some seasalt in the water

- step in

- get soaked your whole pair

- stay in there for 12 min. the longer the tighter the fit

- step out

- take picture of the blue water

- take off slowly

- dont wrench

- hang dry outside in the sun
