would you order on ebay

Recommended Posts

Any experiences with ordering clothing on ebay? bad/good?

I can get a nice selection of Ralph Lauren/Tommy polos for like $8 as opposed to 40-60 in store. Thrift store would be my first choice, but I have no reputable shops within 45 miles of where I reside; an ecommerce solution is inevitable with today's gas prices.

If these pieces of apparel don't quite fit me, would any good tailor be able to cut them appropriately; or do they generally work on more high scale clothing?

a young mind inquires...

My best advise is to look at the sellers feedback. 98% or better is recommended. Most people with at least 50 or so transactions are very mindful of their positive feedback. I myself am very proud of over 160 transactions with 100% positive feedback. If you sell goods on forums you can use it as a reference point for your reliablity even though you are not actually selling you item on ebay. And of course, as above, watch out for fakes. 5 dollar polos still in the plastic wrapper is just a dead freaking give away, so much so that their fakeness is almost implied.

PS good luck young man.

I would say 99.9% of users on here have used e-bay before. Check seller's feedback, have Paypal ready; it is an easy process and if you are smart you won't get screwed.

In regards to tailoring, you can get it done at almost any dry cleaner, which would obviously be the best choice for you since you are planning on only spending $8 on shirts. Tailoring clothes can get expensive. If the shirt is way too big and need to be recut you are looking at at least $40. If you just want the sides taken in a little it will usually cost $15-20. Tailoring polo shirts, however, will more often than not look like shit unless you only need an inch or so taken in.

Just to add to everyones' comments above (all advice is very sound BTW). As far as finding clothes that fit you, the best way I have found is to ask the seller to take very specific measurements of say a shirt (eg: armpit to armpit, shoulder to shoulder, etc.) and then compare these measurements with a shirt that you currently own and that fits you well. The other way is to go to stores, try on stuff and then buy it on ebay for cheaper, but I guess thats not really an option for you. Additionally, regarding fakes check the sellers location (fakes often come from Thailiand, Macau, etc.) and also check their other items, if a guy is selling 20 of the exact same Dior Homme shirts and has all availible sizes theres a pretty good chance they're fake.

Lastly, there is an online software that you can use to check into people's feedback (the site is down at the moment, but just google: toolhaus.org). You can search for negative feedback only or positive feedback only, its much more convenient than looking through mad pages to read the specific comments ppl have left.

Anyway, that my 2cents

if a shirt costs $60 at a store, retailers definately pay more then $8 when buying them in. if stores pay for example $30 for them, then I dont see how any one would be able to sell them for $8. and no one wants to sell without any profit.

most likely anything too cheap is fake on ebay. a very large part of clothing there is.

I've used ebay for 7 years and spent thousands on clothing and also sold a lot. the advice I'd give is stay away from $5 stuff unless you are willing to buy fake, some of them of course might be wearable but thats up to you. also good sellers should answer your questions so ask something. good images of tags or any proofs of authenticity should be included in auctions, if not ask for them. and so on, you'll get the hang of it.
