I know they made one of most expensive shoes in the world, but they are a little too Italian for my taste. Wouldn't mind owning some of their balmorals and monkstraps though.

Their Japanese branch is much more refreshing and varied. I haven't have much experience with them so I can't really comment.

Kapeesh?

I heard a French shoe-lovers saying a while back - "a beautiful Berluti is a Berluti on a shelf". While they look really nice in the stores, and on the website, that beautiful, glossy finish and flawlessly smooth, uncreased upper doesn't last forever in the real world.

Sure, from a style point of view, I like a lot of what they do - all the different kinds of stitching, broguing and piercing on the uppers, the last shapes, the lacing/closures. The antiquing and all the different colors too.

I understand the construction quality has declined somewhat since Berluti's sale to LVMH, and the prices have gone way up. I think that 20 year comment is pure hype - based on the models I've seen, I really doubt that a ready-to-wear pair of Berlutis will last even half that long.

That said, I like the look of the "Club" collection wholecuts worn with the narrow-leg jeans, that promo picture that's on the website and in the magazines. For the price, though, I don't think the RTW is worth it - instead I'll have my own shoemaker run up a special order for something similar, in brown antiqued leather, for much less moolah.

(The Berluti RTW maker is Stefano Bi, if anyone wants to check out some very similar models at a lower pricepoint.)
