Made In The People's Republic Of China

Recently i saw a pair of chambray shirt at my friend's home belonging to dad's work clothes hanging to dry, i inspected it as i would to all denim clothes if chance permit. First thing i did was checking the buttons panel and was surprised to find selvage on the edge of the opening! Upon closer inspection, i can slightly make out the tattered brand's tagging, it contain both chinese and english characters as i barely make out and "Made In The People's Republic Of China". Unfortunately the chinese and english letterings were not very clear.

This made me wonder, were China making selvage chambray or even possibly (at least no one on sufu has a topic on this) selvage denim back many years ago that were somehow unknown to most because their products were confined to China and SouthEast Asia? Maybe someone can shed more info. on this? I'll see what else i can find out.

I have a photo of the chambray's selvage but somehow the .jpg fail to attach. Still working on it!

hint:

every fabric has a selvage.

does not mean it was made on them gayass looms.

I WILL have been made on a gayass loom, quite possibly a Toyoda.

Narrow shuttle looms were common right up to the 70s, for denim, chambray and other fabrics. Open selvage, which is common now, only became popular with projectlie looms.

The history of chambray might be quite different to the history of denim, maybe this shirt shows us it was more widespread than denim?

Pand, this has a closed selvage by the way.

Busted, your point is correct and a popular one, even for myself. However China's textile industry could have developed differently than the West, such as the U.S. This point will remain a void given its not a popular subject though. Hopefully i can find out more about 20th century selvage chambrays or denim from China or any other relevant information that might surface in sufu.

Another point of note, the old man that owns this shirt told me he'd bought it around the 80's or 90's and its pretty cheap. He said this brand's still selling, although i still can't figure out the brand and neither could he recall it! maybe i'll just get him to bring me to that shop.

all i can say is that I wouldn;t be surprised.Coming from singapore(se asia), I went to a museum, and there were exhibits of coolie (olden day blue collared laborers) pants, and to my surprise they were denim. Most of those coolies came from China, so I'm pretty sure that denim as a textile fabric was widely produced in china in the olden days.

why do people insist on thinking that selvage is some holy grail thing that is RARELY FOUND IN JAPAN. it aint a big deal, never was a big deal til it got 'popular'

yes it is highly likely that china used shortlooms before they began mass producing everything and anything.
