I recently attended a funeral and they played The Beatles - In My Life. It was pretty classy and worked quite well I thought. I dunno if it's epic status tho.

dismals right

but i do understand and appreciate how difficult it is even if you did know the person well

if you did know them well, it's much easier than you think, dont worry about being epic, or impressing people, or making anyone cry, if you try to hard it will sound inauthentic, and the last thign anyone wants at a funeral is to make it feel like a wedding, so just let it come from the heart, write something of your own if you want

If you don't mind the fact that the song is from a movie soundtrack (Narnia) , "The Call" by Regina Spektor can fit the bill.

I used it in a little a minute and a half tribute to a girl at my school who passed away, and it hit home for a lot of people. Had a lot of the attendants bawling. Though, what I put on wasn't exactly at a funeral, and the mood was a bit different.

But I agree with the others. This isn't really a time for impressing others. It's understandable though. You probably don't wanna offend anyone by putting up the wrong stuff.

First you look so strong; then you fade away.

The sun will blind my eyes. I love you anyway.

Thirsty for your smile, I watch you for a while.

You are a vapour trail in a deep blue sky.

*edit ~ a little more personal than you were asking for maybe

Last night they came with news of death

not knowing what I would say.

I wanted to say,

"The green wind is running through the fields

making the grass lie flat."

I wanted to say,

"The apple blossom flakes like ash

covering the orchard wall."

I wanted to say,

"the fish float belly up in the slow stream,

stepping stones to the dead."

They asked if I would sleep that night,

I said I did not know.

For this loss I could not speak,

the tongue lay idle in a great darkness,

the heart was strangely open,

the moon had gone,

and it was then

when I said, "He is no longer here"

that the night put its arms around me

and all the white stars turned bitter with grief.
