Crotch Holes

everyone gets them. and i have a question:

1) do you patch like a puzzle piece, with a piece of fabric close to the same shape as the hole, placed over it on the outside with the edges sewn together, OR do you take a piece of fabric not necesarily as close to the same shape as the hole, and place it against the hole on the inside, and sew it in by sewing along the edges of the hole from the outside?

i know the latter is reinforcing, but what would be better if the hole has become worn away making it impossible to first sew up then reinforce-patch. to straight up patch up/over the hole?

take a needle and jam it in your eye.

otherwise, normally people would have a similar sized square of denim (in proportion to the hole), flip the pants inside out (so you can see warp/weft) and stitch it so that you can't see a 'square' of denim, but rather a layer of bullshit and aids.
