I think Nas' albums are more memorable overall, but Jay is easliy the better artist. Nas has an ability to create a solid atmosphere in his albums, and is a compitent rapper, but Jay just has a way with words.

He's run the gamut with artists he's collaborated with -- from Fabolous to Vast Aire, he kills every track he makes an appearance on.

I gotta say though, Lil' Wayne is better than both of them.

Excuse me? Jay did something with Vast Aire?!?!?! Why would he do that?

Do you write for ROllingstone?

oh and i do agree that "lil weezy" is a better rapper than both of them.

put lil weez, bird man and Kellz on the same track with mannie fresh on tha beatz and you got a number 1 hit on your hands every time.

i dont know how you can think weezy is better than nas and jay.....agreed he can churn out hits and he does show flashes of brilliance but be real here hes such a dickrider he raps about himself as if he was from brooklyn.....

I've personally always liked jay better... but Nas errupted like no one thought he could on ether... That said, Super Ugly was still my favorite track in the battle...

I think Illmatic is one of the top 3 rap albums ever (my personal fav album).. but I think both their first albums were their best. NaS is still King of NY though...american Gangster was a joke of an album, and Kingdom Come wasn't any better...J just fell off and you can't deny it.

Another thing that pissed me off about J was that he said he was retiring and then he was putting out another album a year later...considering it takes about a year for Jay to put an album out (even though those recent albums sound like they were produced in 4 days), that is like a 1 day retirement.

Nas is original...stillmatic and Lost Tapes were both sick LP's as well

The fuck are you talking about?

Jay had a verse on "The F Word"

Also NESK - I don't know what you're talking about either. Does my opinion echo that of Pitchfork's? If so, it's pure coincidence. I take what they say with a grain of salt.

Wayne is seriously just a better rapper than both Nas and Jay. His shit is ECCLECTIC 4 REAL

I almost spit my fucking wine out while reading this. That was funny b. I'm not sure what version of Cold Vein you have.

Trust me...Jay never has/never will do anything Def Jux related. That might be one of the larger Hip Hop indie labels, but do you really think there is enough money there for even a hook, let alone a verse? I think the only time Jay has done indie shit is his own "In My Lifetime" single, Big Jaz's "Foundation," and arguably a Ranjahz joint (they might have still been signed to some shitty major label, just got shelved).

You have a better chance in betting that Vast will be on a Kanye song, before Jay does some shit for Def Jux...Vast hasn't been in BK for THAT long now (nor has he known Dame Dash, just cause he was from Harlem).

Personally, as an older dude who's listened to Hip Hop for a LONG time now, I find that mind-boggling, in a way...not necessarily because you have a different opinion...but the logic associated (to formulate that opinion) is what gets me. To keep it funky with you, it's really really really hard not to assume that you are in the age range of 12 - 21 with an outlandish opinion on Hip-Hop like that (even anything passed 19 is a stretch).

At the same time, I look at what a lot of it has become, and it doesn't surprise me that people really think that...shit on the mainstream level has been reduced to such a lightspeed consumer market now...which has obviously shifted the way some people think and evaluate an artist.

IMO, I will never say that Lil Wayne could ever hold a candle to Jay or Nas...but to entertain the thought (and perhaps gain a better understanding), why do you, d-disk (not to zero in on you), believe Wayne is better than both Nas and Jay-Z? What does he do to make him better?

Any other Wayne fans should answer only if you think Wayne is better than both Nas and Jay (not just one of them...otherwise it's redundant since we already heard your opinion on "Nas vs. Jay").

wow how englightening, can you sir tell me what nas's first song was?
yup, its gettin live...

...at the BBQ

Live at the BBQ....

Funny. But seriously that was pretty idiotic because even an idiot can look this up on Wikipedia (I know I didn't). On the other hand. I just wish for once that backpackers would realize knowing some obscure fact about hip hop doesn't prove that they're "OG" and was always with it and thus are cool. Who the fuck cares. Hip hop is hip hop no matter who listens to it.

This is also fucking retarded. Two grown men bitching about each other. It was a fucking cat fight. Mr. Hova being the good boy he was apologized to Mr. Jones after his mommy told him what he said wasn't very nice. Mr. Jones a few years later accepted a label deal from Mr. Hova. What does this tell you? Meow meow scratch scratch. He's Escobar because he sold Jay-Z estrogen pills.

But if you ask my completely unprofessional opinion, the bitching was a stalemate. Nas was just a fucking nasty kindergartner with "Gay-Z and Cockafella" and Jay-Z was a 4 year old biter with "you know who did you know what with you know who". And here little young me, thinking grown men would know better.

But honestly. I think Nas makes better music. Good classic music = floetry, not one time comedy. But I have to say besides the bitching, they are both quite excellent in different ways.

And btw sampling = hip hop only refers to the beat. Good MCs get their own lines because it's the least they can contribute unless it's something stupidly obvious. You don't applaud people who subvertly change other people's rhymes to make it sound like yours. You call them out on it because it's fucking pitiful.

But again what the fuck do I know. I'm a young'n and I like Weezy F. Baby. I think a lot of his metaphors are quite quite dope and funny. Again, they're only one time comedy, but still. quite dope. And I know this sounds dumb, but I like his swagger. He has the right attitude going into the game. He's young with delusions of grandeur.

  • 1 year later...

how does americna gangster get shit on so hard? i think after the black album, its jays best. ill put it above reasonable doubt even, just cause i spit in the face of nostalgia. that record plays like an opera or a shakespeare play. there arent any concept albums that develop as well as this one. maybe deltron but thats apples and oranges. in terms of bangin ass tracks and beats, blackalbum is flawless. but as an artistic statemnt and a declaration of how deep you can get on the mic, amercian gangster is hands down an accomplishment not just for one of the best doing it now, but of the best to ever do it.

what the fuck...RD and *BLACK ALBUM*?! Fucking Black Album was garbage save a few. The grossly misunderstood Kingdom Come was better than that shit.

Jay-Z has RD, Blueprint, IML Vol. 1 to speak for him. And there's some good shit sprinkled everywhere else but just too much unevenness. He doesn't give a fuck about makin music any more he just wants to invest in shit, chill, and give the occasional slam dunk concert performance.
