Real Vintage Levis

This question is directed at those who buy (and sell) vintage denim a lot. Where is the best place to find vintage denim? And what prices will I expect to pay? I'm interested in Levis 501s from 1937-1960. I live in LA. My choices are probably Ebay, vintage stores that specialize in that sort of thing, thrift stores, etc.

I don't mind heavily washed stuff, as I will not be able to afford the real deal with just a few washes (a '55 501 went on Ebay recently for 1500$)

Serge, I heard you recommend Wasteland before, any other LA recommendations?

Also, any sure fire ways to tell authenticity? I guess to know all the details from each time period, and also the back of the button stamp.

Maybe American Rag in LA? if they sell used clothes like the SF one does.
