so, i'm in LA at the backstage which is a very popular karaoke bar in culver city. this is at a birthday party for a friend of a friend. crowd was almost entirely white, which i wasn't used to.

i put in donny hathaway, "this christmas," a sure-fire winner in new york. when the dj saw the song, he looked at me and gave me a knowing nod.

i sang a really good rendition. but no one knew the song, the crowd was ice cold. lesson learned, never sing donny hathaway to a white crowd.

a little later, a very nice older lady who is a popular semi-pro karaoke singer in the area came up to me, "that's donny hathaway. that's my era." she gave me some tips on how to control the crowd and song selection. at least she and the dj felt my performance. i'll be back!!!
