fashion staples.

dont know if theres already a topic, but i searched and didnt find anything. im on a madden break and i feel like making threads.

what do you think are some basic "must haves" that should be in every mans closet, in terms of versatility, function, aesthetic, and timelessness?

what are some pieces that, in 10, 20, 50 years time, would still be "fashionable" and if paired with some of the other garments, would even create a look unique to the times?

and all the while, be functional and versatile enough to protect you in any weather?

what do you think are some fashion staples? what are your favorites?

blazer- tweed

suit- dark grey, black, blue

shirt- white, blue

t-shirt- white, grey, black, rainbow vomit

v-neck- same as above

tank top- same

cardigan- black, grey, blue

waistcoat- black, grey, blue, brown

denim- black, blue

m-65- green, black

peacoat- blue, grey, black

riders jacket- black

zip hoodie- black

MA1- WILLIAM GIBSON long

n3- black

khakis

western shirt- flannel, houndstooth

thats about $6000 in clothes right there, depending on the brands, but these would last me a lifetime.

feel free to provide a list or give single pieces.

Dark blue denim; regular fit

Khaki pants

Clark Wallabees

New Balance 992

Dress shoes and matching belt (for the suits)

V-neck sweaters; brown, grey, black (tan?)

Oxfords; white, blue, yellow, pink (should probably have 5-6 to last through the week)

Blazer; tweed and navy

Dress watch

Everyday watch

T-shirts; white, grey, black, some colors, all solid though

2-3 flannel shirts (I grew up in Maine, these will be a staple forever)

Bean boots (see above)

Suits, charcoal, blue, brown

3/4 length overcoat

Pea Coat

Baracuta G9

Polo shirts; white, grey, 2 or 3 color

I've most likely forgotten some stuff. Obiously some willl disagree. I enjoy this topic though. What does everyone else have to say?

i see where red's getting at...

for me, as long as the quality and cut is superb, it should be able to last at least a few years.

pea coats, m65, riders jackets, dark/raw jeans, worn out jeans (not hand-washed/bleached)... pretty much most of your list red

but...

i don't know why you'd want to keep scraggy basics and stuff - those should be replaced every so often, but each to his own. of course, the basic will always be a staple.

i can still see slim jeans being continuously in the fashion spot, however the 'trend' hopefully will die out some time then.

who knows, we might be wearing space glitter suits. i think i'd like to be blind by the time that it comes.

If I've learned anything from Hollywood, it is that in the fuure we will all be wearing the same jumpsuits. Whether it be "space glitter" or just regular glitter. I guess this whole thread is moot then.

that was meant 2 sho egalitarian nature of future

HOLLYWOOD R COMMIEZ

no cluthin will last a lifetime

i kno thaat by this time next year, i won't like any of the cluthins i got now and will want sumthin new.

agree, even with basic items like tee shirts and hoodies, the cut changes from time to time; nobody wore aa-slim tee shirts in the 50s, not James Dean, not Marlon Brando, nobody. even the "timeless item" will have an "out of style" cut; the clothing industry depends on this, it is not an accident.

i have been reading about these jumpsuits since before many of the members here were born, the damn things never drop.

... is the ma-1 thing a joke?

the ma-1 may actually be one of the few timeless items... but not the long version. the long version is a bow to changing style/fashion... again.

I've never had the exact same items of clothing but I have had "genres" of the same thing my entire life:

- surplus army jacket

- tee shirts

- jeans

- some form of trouser

- 2 suits, a "cool" one (navy blue! when I was a kid, now, a grey gabardine Lad Musician), one black, for funerals or other family functions.

- hats! snapback, fedora, watch cap, fitteds sometimes

- winter boots! (circa 4th grade, nylon pull-ons, now, Alden cordovan wing-tip boot)

- canvas sneakers

- socks, some crazy patterned, some conservative

- dress shooz

- bandanna, scarf, etc. etc.

edit: forgot sunglasses! always cool

Not gonna comment on other people's lists, but here's mine:

Black suit, well cut.

White shirt, black skinny tie. Sure, they're plain, but they're classic.

Black leather shoes, I like slip-ons.

Jeans, well-fitting of course, I like dark washes.

T-shirt... I happen to favor rock T's, most colors work.

Peacoat, again, well cut, black or dark grey.

Zip hoodie, brown or dark grey.

Sneakers, retro or chucks.

Army Surplus or similarly style jacket, green.

Lighweight shallow V-neck sweater, dark grey, navy, brown. Can be worn in dress or casual situations.

Some kind of scarf, grey or brown. Maybe even a deep red.

Black leather belt.

And I love my military cap. Grey tweed or black.

i dunno, most people in middle age would look like a tool in an ma-1. i am assuming we are talking about wardrobe staples that are more or less invariable through one's life?

I think you are correct, that is what he means, items that could last a lifetime.

About the MA-1, though, it is a pretty basic, utilitarian kind of jacket, worn by people of all ages and cultural identities; I think it takes on the character of the person wearing it, and the other clothes they are wearing. I guess I don't understand your take on it.
