X.O. isn't the highest rating, you can have something that is "beyond XO" but that doesn't have a label as such.

XO/VSOP etc aren't legal classifications like the wines of the bordeaux region (cru, grand cru) or brandy.

The quality/level depends on where the eaux-de-vie that the makers use for the cognac is from, which doesn't have a rating system, you just have to recognize the names.

a word on brandies and cognacs: for your money, look into some domestic small batch producers (ex. germain robin in northern, ca). or, if you want your shit french, read up on armagnacs instead.
