you have to find your niche and what void you are filling. It's obviousily a lot easier to just start with t-shirts. I disagree that you need to be a good designer, more that you have to have a good sense of design. Because there are 10,000's of graphic designers that are really talented and would love work. Start small and find a few retailers who are willing to grow with you. It is probably nice to have an internship to learn the ropes, but experience is the best teacher of them all.
