ATMs and Credit Crad in Tokyo

I'm going to Tokyo at the end of May and I heard through a friend that they have almost no ATMs and hardly ever take debit or credit cards. They advised on travelers checks and to exchange them at a bank ? Does any one know if this is true ?

What part of Tokyo did you guys go to? Everybody accepts credit cards, I never had a problem using a foreign credit card over there.

never had a problem w/ CC in tokyo. also, find a citibank and you can use thier ATMs.

but best bet is to exchange some JPY before you get there.

I depends. If you're at a foriegn friendly place like Roppongi or a major tourist area, chances are they take credit cards. But if you're at a hole-in-the-wall place or out around the outskirts of Tokyo, prolly not likely. My recommendation is to bring lots of cash. Japan is a cash economy and most people don't steal. I was biking one day and dropped my wallet and after 20 minutes a car came by carrying my wallet and asking if I had dropped it.

The same... NEVER a problem. I use credit or ATM everywhere there!

A little pocket yen is all I've ever needed & I always end up exchanging some back in

so my expierience has been credit cards are the easiest most stress free way to go...

fuji bank, hsbc, and citbank all take american atm cards

pretty much every non food place took credit cards

Yep Citibanks are rare but they take your ATM card or Credit Card for cash (don't forget they close early) . major credit cards are taken at almost all retailers.
