Can't speak for Phuket, but the Metropolitan on Sathorn is an excellent boutique hotel located in the city's financial district and is home to the Met Bar, a modern hip bar/lounge for expats and the local hi-so crowd.

Edit: I just realized you posted before, and I mentioned patpong.......

Depends what you are looking for and how much time you have. If you are in Phuket for several days, you need to stay in a little beach hut on Phi Phi for at least 1-2. These will run you between $7-10 a day.

In Bangkok, depending on what you are into, there are several great places. If you want a crazy partying atmosphere and more fake goods for sale than you can shake a stick at, then check out the Patpong area. Patpong has many predominantly "gay" hotels so you need to know the deal before you book. Check out La Residence for a nice, normal (i.e. not full of fat Germans and their 18-yr. old Thai boyfriends) boutique hotel a 15-min. walk from Patpong. Great rooms, great service, and great price. This place is very cute and definitely suitable for bringing a girlfriend. I think you will both enjoy Patpong immensely. Let me know if you do book it and I will tell you which bars to avoid. Also, although it is a crazy party area, do not worry about safety. There are thousands of tourists there at all times of night. Even if you don't stay there, you need to check it out at least once in your life.

you said it's in the financial district, is it too far from the shopping and good nightlife?

Should be easy to get wherever you need to go. On Sathorn, you're actually right around the corner from Silom Road, where Patpong is located on Silom Soi 4. Silom Soi 2 is where the gay district is located. Soi Thaniya also on Silom is the Japanese hostess bar street dripping in neon.

Suan Lum Night Bazaar is also very close. The only thing is that the area gets quiet at night, but it should be easy to grab a cab at any hour of the night.
