All of his scenes are 'real life.' I am guessing that in the border patrol scene he was granted a "day in jail" to observe how it would be (under the guise that he is a Kazahkstani reporter). The part where he is actually 'captured' at the border, however, is obviously a joke to play along with the jail scene.
