  1. You’re right b_F, the other one’s more about jeans than denim per se - I should have read the intro rather than just the title. I quite like seeing a continuity of theme from old threads and reading what people thought about denim 5, 10, 15 years ago (plus observing how tastes and ideas have changed) rather than having duplication because people aren’t aware of pre-existing ones. In this case, however, if it’s just the denim, then I think it’s sufficiently different to stand alone, so I’m happy to leave as is. Looking back, there are a number of similar favourite jean threads in addition to the one I mentioned - Top 5, favourite jeans, 1 pair to take to a desert island, etc…!
  2. Should this thread be merged with this one - Holy Grail Denim on page 10?
  3. Hi @Toegun, I think that has already been mentioned so should be on the To Do list.
  4. I bought a Lightning magazine from them last year I think. The transaction was fine.
  5. I don’t generally like Whole Earth, I find it too dry but perhaps the dark roasted one is different. We usually buy standard Pip & Nut crunchy or occasionally Manilife. I like their deep roast.
  6. Send it to me and I’ll hide it in the Blue Peter garden for you.
  7. Re Classifieds. Yes, I would post there. Although as @Double 0 Soul mentioned, I don’t visit any of the other parts of the forum outside Superdenim so would need a change in my habit. Plus, I get the feeling it may be swamped by items for sale that I have no interest in, such as 3D printed Acronym trousers and Rick Owens leather ponchos, etc so would be harder to navigate.
  8. I’ve never worn (or even tried on) the Sugar Cane ‘66 model but from what I’ve read, it should be fine to size down by 1” on them as long as the waist will fit - so you’ll have to do some homework on that measurement (plenty of info scattered around this thread, plus vendors charts). They should have a loose top block with a higher rise than the Hawaii but a tapered lower leg.
  9. Try this: https://supertalk.superfuture.com/topic/33596-levis-501-a-visual-guide/
  10. UK chainstitch hemming: Son of a Stag - London Rivet & Hide - London & Manchester Clutch Café - London
  11. Thanks @superfuture, looks like we’ve avoided the dreaded Y2K(23) bug 😅 Edit: I think TLS = Transport Layer Security but I’m hazy on the details!
  12. Superfluous selvedge, rogue red tabs - sounds like one of Paul T’s legendary Thai fakes.
  13. ^ those items must’ve ridden the storm out Charlie, especially the blanket lined jackets.
  14. Perhaps they’re showing as sold out until they actually become available and then the correct quantities will be shown so that customers can order them.
  15. I think they’re trying to gaslight us with their own ‘truths’!
  16. Thanks Paul, according to Wikipedia: ”The town (of Whitburn) was once the site of Levi Strauss & Co., the clothing manufacturer. The plant opened in 1969, employing a work force of over 500 local people. At its height, the plant was producing 4 million pairs of jeans in a year. The plant shut its doors in December 1999.”
  17. So if the SC-1947 is Sugar Cane’s slim-straight cut, then which model is their straight cut? I don’t think the SC-66 has ever been considered a slim-straight cut either. I’m really confused here…
  18. I know this could run and run but most people would consider the SC-47 a classic straight cut. I don’t know anywhere that you’d find it described as slim-straight.
  19. I think slim-straight is as described above (ie straight) but with smaller proportions, e.g. the 13” thigh and 9” hem would be standard for a 32” waist and a slim-straight version would probably have 11.5” thigh and 7.5” hem. Check out Sugar Cane measurements for their 1947 (straight cut) and then the slimmer versions of the 1947 model. There is no way a 13” thigh and 9” hem on a W32 is slim-straight.
  20. My understanding and experience of a straight cut is not one that’s straight down from the thighs with parallel outseam and inseam but a cut that tapers from the thigh to the knee and then runs straight to the hem. Most of the straight cuts I have tend to have a 13” thigh and 9” hem (approx).
  21. There’s also Full Count 0106, which, I think, are an even looser cut than the 0105s (the current versions of which, have a wider hem than the 0105s with arcs and tab).
  22. I know it flies in the face of everything that Duke has (correctly) suggested above but I’ve used Vaseline lip balm on numerous jeans patches for years and seen no obvious detrimental effects on the leather, stitching or denim. I didn’t buy it for this purpose but used it because it was at hand.
  23. As far as I’m aware that’s week 39 of 1987, so late September/early October’87. Levi’s did have a factory in the UK (Scotland) in the 1980s and I think the factory code was 299, which matches that stamped on the back of the top button. So, a legitimate pair of UK-made 501s from 1987 seems right to me.
