Levis Scent

I remember when I was younger (80's) I would get Levis and they would have a distinct scent, like a soap type smell. Does anybody know the history/story behind it and when did they stop using it. It might be on their lower end jeans cause I used to just buy Levis at work wear places only.

I'm going to bump this thread.

Just to clarify I'm talking about the new Levi's denim from back in the day. Does anybody remember it, or was it a Canadian thing? I remember going to certain places that sold Levi's and the whole place would have this Levi's smell.

I remember it -- but I think it was just the smell of dry denim. These days you rarely find a shop filled entirely with dry denim so so you don't get the full-on effect.

The interesting (and incredibly nerdy) question is: would a blindfolded denim-head be able to recognize a brand of dry denim just by the smell?
