Denim Sociology 101

It seems to me that the recently popular grungy look, ie superdistressed, ripped up, painted etc. seemed to be a few people trying to be a little different.

rationale : if your wearing a plain pair of jeans, you look no different to the next guy. So put a few rips in them etc. and you stand out.

Obviously the rationale has changed now and many people are wearing the ripped up jeans to follow the trend and not stand out.

When i talked about this to my friends it felt like it was deep but in reality this is just a more obvious example of all fashion trends really.

I hope indigo doesn't cause cancer...

There has also been a recent migration towards multicolored fabrics as well. You'll notice that alot of fitted tees use an initial shirt that blends from one color into another to provide vibrance and variation. This same theory applies to jeans, contrast is present because of the distressing.
