Most fall/winter jackets go on sale in January/February to get ready for spring, but you might have some luck with these:

www.backcountry.com - check the outlet section...sometimes better deals in the normal section

www.moosejaw.com - sale section

www.patagonia.com - have good deals with last season's stuff

www.sierratradingpost.com - you'll have to dig

Yah first place I went to was BackCountry..

I've never had any of these types of jackets so I don't know how they fit. Any particular ones that are good? I want a hardshell against wind/water but it does get mighty cold in Michigan...

If you're in Ann Arbor, why don't you just go to Bivouac? Is that store still open? I used to get all my northface and padagonia stuff there.

I am here rarely over the summer, but coincidentally I am here today for work..will stop by that place on my lunch break :)

I hope I find something...

anyone have some good alternatives to the more generic or popularized brands in the US? slimmer fits, style variation, etc?

Honestly, I thing going with the "popular" stuff is the best you can do...North Face and the like are already hella expensive....anything else trying to copy them w/ a streetwear/japanese flare is going to cost you even more $$$

Acronym makes some more streetwear-like stuff...but its pretty pricey. I have the Spraymaster jacket from Patagonia, and its very slim fitting and super stretchy. Another company (I think they're in Maine) is Wild Things...very cool stuff.

A little lesson in waterproof barriers (from best to worst) for breathability IMO:

-eVent

-Patagonia's H2no

-Goretex XCR

-Goretex Paclite

-North Face's Hyvent

Ugh, I went to Bivouc and did not find anything. I tried some rain jackets on but what I thought was my size felt a bit big (long in the sleeves as well.) There were no smaller sizes.

The rain jackets don't even feel all that special to be worth what they are..someone shed some light on em for me?

Most rain shells are oversized to account for layering...they assume you'll be putting a fleece underneath in the winter. The sleeves are usually really long so you can reach over your head without the jacket lifting up over your waist. Remember that most of these companies are catering to people using these jackets for climbing/hiking/sports.

What's your price range, and what will you be doing in the jacket (just for around town/everyday, or something specific). What's the weather like where you are...do you NEED a fully waterproof jacket, or will something repellent work?

I live in Michigan, we do have pretty cold winters. During the school year I am in Ann Arbor. I want a jacket to hold up against rain/wind when walking and riding my bike. I think I won't be riding my bike much during the winter w/ snow on the ground, but when it rains or is just plain cold out I will be on it. I don't want to spend much more than $100 on the jacket, hence I am looking for past season ones on sale or even eBay..

My idea was that when it gets cold, I'll put something on underneath it for layering..

Here are a few ideas. This will only be the shell though...so you'll need to wear a sweater or something underneath when its cold out:

I'm not a big North Face fan...I find their quality to be shit for the price. It you get a really good deal, then whatever, but never pay full price for TNF.

Thanks for all those links..I actually found a Mountain Hardwear jacket @ REI on my way back from Ann Arbor today, but I'm sure those would be helpful for others.

Here's my purchase (also posted in Recent purchases...)

Good times. Who makes the wallet? I'm assuming its not Redmoon if you only had $100 for a jacket...unless the wallet was your priority of course. :D Its still very nice either way...I'm scared of natural leather in the backpocket of my jeans...I've already trashed every wallet I own with indigo stains.

Gotta love Michigan winters...I live in Ypsilanti and bike to and from Ann Arbor pretty often (for Encore Records, mostly). Thermal base + hoodie + sherpa coat + Chinook rain coat always did the job, but what you picked up looks a lot more flattering and stylish than all that.
