Just looking for some advice on clubs in Paris. Ill be here throughout July and am basically looking for any big, fun, clubs to go to while I'm here. I am staying next to oberkampf, which is basically between place de la republique and place de la bastille.

I hear Le Baron recently stopped having live music. Their sunday karaoke nights have moved to Le Paris Paris (22:30), owned by the same duo.

Rue Oberkampf (and surroundings) offer plenty of nice bars and restuarants. Staying in this neighborhood will give you an excellent chance to check them out. It's all very lively during the weekends.

Bars

Andy Wahloo (Rue des Gravilliers) pre-clubbing bar with plenty of dancing

Planete Mars (rue Keller) good music, awesome atmosphere

De la Ville Café (Boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle) good pre-clubbing hangout with nice food

La Mezzanine (Rue Mazarine) chilled out bar, good DJs but no dancing

Chez Carmen (rue Vivienne) join trannies and weirdos for late late late night drinks

Clubs

Le Showcase (under Pont Alexandre III) long waiting lines after 24:00

Batofar (Quai François Mauriac) live bands and DJs and an awesome terrace bar overlooking the Seine that is open in the summer months only

Le Paris Paris (Av de L'Opera) scenester galore, even the tuesdays are cool (weird)

For the more glamorous and VIP spotting, head to Bar Le Costes, Bar du Plaza Athénée, La Suite and BC (formerly Black Calvados).

Avoid Le Cab and Kong.

I forgot to mention Le Point Ephémère (200, quai de Valmy) - very alternative and grunchy, this is situated by the water in an industrial-like complex.

And another spot for the rich and famous is the White Room at Maison Blanche (av Montaigne).

And indeed, it seems beards are the new black in Paris.

My buddy just got back from fashion week or whatever. He's got a beard like Rick Rubin, and they treated him like a king! I think its cuz a lot french people can't grow lumberjack beards and therefore those with them are somewhat of an anomoly (or is that a gross generalization?).

BC is like 5 tables, all filled with models. It's tight, both literally and figuratively ;)

Now that we're on the subject, sleazie, is Le Baron still hard to get into? For the beardless I mean..

I suppose it all depends on the night (and the season for that matter).

Obviously, if you're going on a hot night, you're going to need some extra pull. Fortunately, I was with a photographer friend, who knows a lot of the local scenesters, which makes entry infinately easier. If I'm flying solo, I make my Asianess work to my advantage.

The advice of dressing well, in the mold of say ririwan, may apply in the states but unfortunately,

Everyone in Paris nightlife is "killing it" with their outfits so to speak, so I suppose dressing well goes without saying.

Showing up with a beautiful woman is the only surefire way, so I'd hit cafes and such all day long, and chat up some Parisian beauties and use them as your pawns for your nightlife revelry.

Last time I visited Le Baron (about two years ago) it was mission impossible to get in despite the fact that I was with beautiful female entourage. The doordick was annoying the hell out of me.

Yea baron still has fort knox security, key is to get there early, not more than a party of 3, foxy entourage, and most importantly confidence and attitude . don't hesitate to act like a dick, pretend like your someone famous or act like one and you might indeed get red carpet treatment.... and if all else fails tell the doorman that Lionel (the boss) is expecting you and threaten to call him on his cell if he don't let you in !

seriously though the place is well overhyped, it's worth one visit just to see the +30 crowd stuff their noses with coke and do the twist over a serbian gipsy cover of kylie minogue...

the other recommendations are good, i am actually playing @ planete mars tommorow evening with a friend (were paid in booze how better can it get?!), nearby pop'in has the indie rock/skinny boys scene( no wonder it was hedi slimane's favorite hangout..)

rue oberkampf, i'd recommend cafe charbon // nouveau casino, great venue and soundsystem, oh and don't forget to hit the mythic summer respect parties on the concorde boat every wednesdays, and terasse afternoon parties on sundays @ batofar...

finally check vodkacoca.com for daily updates of selected parties, scene events..etc trust me that site will be your best guide into the parisian night scene.. youll thank me later.

No le baron is run by grafitti artist André and his partner Lionel (they are known together as La Clique). Funny you mention Nick Blast, i went to school with him at the american university of paris. He was just a school DJ back then, but went into heavy club promoting around champs-elysee night scene and now opened a pretty cool place not far from baron, the Black Calvados with his brother in law Chris Cornell...yea the guy from Soundgarden lol. i was just there the other night, its pretty small but killer design, basically feels like your in a giant dior homme dressing room or something... pretty unique.

Ah, ok, that makes sense. I've heard of La Clique. Last time I was there, I met Nick Blast at some art thing, he seemed like a cool, friendly guy. I knew he was somehow interwined into the nightlife scene, was trying to piece the puzzle together. A lot of clubowners start off a party promoters, and the good ones eventually get backers to start their own I suppose. I will definately check out Black Calvados. Thanks for the knowledge.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure they have moved their sunday night karaoke to Le Paris Paris and I don't see any live acts on their agenda. When were those gigs you mention exactly?
