New York Apartments/Hotels

Planning a short trip to new york, any one had any past experiences with renting apartments there, which they would recomend or any hotels. Nothing too expensive, alst time I went I stayed in a hotel, a couple of blocks away from central park which was nice, cant remember the name, any way, somthign with a roof terrace would be awsome .
