What happened to Levis selvedge?

Another new face joins the ranks, can anyone tell me why Levis made their LVC's look completely ridiculous when they started to make the busted outseam on the selvedge edge very narrow, i've got a pretty big collection of the early vintage big E stuff that Levis put together pre LVC, right the way through to the 1886 deadstock jeans.

Around about when Levis produced the 1933 varieties the busted outseam suddenly became very narrow (from about 1" wide on the early stuff down to less than 1/2" wide on the 1933's and onwards) i'ts just a personal thing but i'm old enough to remeber wearing big E's when thats all you could get and part of what made Levis stand out was the rolled up cuff and a nice wide selvedge on show.

Yeah I noticed that also but the denim has gotten much nicer than it was a couple years ago. More like the early stuff. The green line on the 1886s is just outstanding. Also on my 555 33s its narrow but its very wide on my buth my green line 20s 201s 555 and my 37 201s 555....

I think i agree with you that the denim has gotten much nicer over the last couple of years, i really like the pre LVC jeans they put together in the early ninties, details on the jeans were all over the place but the denim is first class.

Its also narrow on my 555 '47.

Narrow selvedge, IMO, actually looks more refined and is a lot closer to the original. But a lot people really dig the wide selvedge, so thats a valid reason to produce them that way too. There are many companies that do this on purpose. Nudie comes to mind.
