I'm a 31 and I undersized to 29 and eventually they stretched out, basically they ended up a skinny fit but pretty uncomfortable for awhile.I wish I would have gotten my normal size or 1 size up, at Hinoya they originally recommended size 31 or 32 for me. But that was 10 years ago, I would search recent posts, sometimes Japanese brands recently will taper the waist inward because Japanese people are way skinnier with narrower hips, and the waistband measures less than the hip width (If that makes any sense) so recently when I went to Hinoya I was having to wear 33,34, even 35-36 in a lot of brands, even Iron Heart (I'm US size 31). So definitely search recently posts unless you get the option to return them.

They are beautiful and have lasted for years with no crotch bust, they are really utilitarian and rugged and my more expensive jeans have busted years earlier. They are really streaky from the natural fiber and look really from the 1940's or something now, and have faded 10x better than all my other jeans. Sugar Cane is top notch and at the top of my list and they are way cheaper than  Momotaro, PBJ, Denime, etc. which I've tried. Those are kind of marketing/trend heavy brands but Sugar Cane is the real deal.

Cheers @brainmonster, I did go true to size with a 36 in the SC40301 14OZ RYUKYU INDIGO MIXED SUGAR CANE DENIM, and I'm definitely glad I did as they a re a little sung but still comfortable and a very good length in the leg (34 minimum). I'll get some fit picks up soon, basically I see them as my motivational trousers to keep me on the right side of a 36 waist. It can be done!

  2. @dudewuttheheck awesome jacket mate.

Weather is still quite cool in the mornings before I have to start peeling off the layers.

The only consistency in my get up are the Warehouse 1001. The turnups get higher and higher as the temperature does...

I have the Okinawa Sugar Cane (your first option). As far as I understand it, those models are cut the same, with the same denim & different details. The Okinawa starts darker than the Hawaii.

It's a great option. They are comfy pants with a lot of room in the thighs, like a 501 1947 cut. I have big legs for my waist, and those are great for that kind of body.

The denim itself has a lot of character - I posted a close up of my pair in the Sugar Cane thread just a couple days ago. The value can't be beat IMHO.

You can read on the 2 jeans on Selfedge's site (I bought mine from them):

^^ I have experience with both. The Hawaii (lot 401) will likely stretch a little more than the Okinawa (lot 301).

edit: ^ They are the same cut and feature similar details, but use very different fabric. Same 50/50 yarns, but the Hawaii is a RHT dyed with a mix of natural and synthetic dyes for a very streaky mix of true blues while the Okinawa is a LHT dyed with (I believe) 100% synthetic indigo, and starts off with much more of a classic greyish hue. The Okinawa starts to lose color considerably more quickly.

@JDelage and @julian-wolf thanks for your responses. The Ryukyu (or Okinawa) are still my first choice, hopefully they stretch out enough as the 36 are listed as being 35.5. But I do like the Hawaiian as they are a different shade then the usual selevedge denim.

  4. I'm getting some store credits at Denimio for a return and Sugar Cane are a brand who have been on my radar for a while. I'm really interested in SC40301 14OZ RYUKYU INDIGO MIXED SUGAR CANE DENIM - BUT the SC40401 14OZ HAWAIIAN INDIGO MIXED SUGAR CANE DENIM have also peaked my interest. I am a "healthy" size 36, does anyone have first hand experience with either of these denim and do they stretch out after numerous wears?

    Thanks.

  5. @volvo240thebest hi Volvo, Denimio have the seamen jumper at a very nice price but I was looking at their sizing and it claims a size 46 is 25.4 in the chest. Does it require soaking so that it shrinks down to a size 46? What is your experience? Thanks in advance for any help.

I wonder that myself haha. The past year has been a bit mad with the number of pairs that I have bought, but doing it while I can.

I am a perpetual rotator. I can't wear the same pair every day for months, as I get bored quickly. I wear what I want when I fancy it.

Yup, that’s my approach in a nut shell.

  7. @garden gnomes in space Thanks, I spoke to an online sales rep and she said the sizing was actually 36” for a size 5 not 38”. Hopefully they will correct their website. But I had another look at the pics and I’m not sure if it’s even selvedge denim as it looks like regular stitching on the inside of the leg sleeve. Might explain why the inseam is so long?

  8. @erockisalive yeah I saw so what are the End doing putting size 5 as a 38? Kind of makes me hesitate on buying as I’m a healthy 36.

    But I’m definitely not a 38 waist

  9. Hello, I found orSlow 105 rigid on the End website in both size 4 and 5. Does anyone know if the rigid denim is sanforized or does it need a soak before wearing and if so how much can expect it to shrink? I'm usually a 36 in most, which is what the End is claiming to be a size 4. I'm wondering if I should go for a size 5 in case they do need a good soaking. Thanks in advanced for any help.

This looks good in terms of fit. The Oni high rise are not very high on the rise but the leg opening is something like 6.5? More like a carrot fit I guess. I'd be interested in pictures of those when you can.

@i_denim Thanks, they are still pretty stiff from the initial soak I gave them before I folded them up and put them away, I think a few days wear will help them relax into their real fit.

I think for ONI, compared to the other secret denim cuts, the high rise is pretty high but compare to other brands they're just standard but I like that and to me they feel more "normal" compared to my other ONI pair. I did however go true to size with a 36, I usually size down because of the amount of stretch they give so even after soaking them for an hour in really hot water I have now thrown them in the washing machine to see if I can get the top block more fitted. Finger crossed that will do the trick as I was developing a shelf (or a "fold" from the excess material)  in the crotch area :(

Once they dry I'll get some fit picks and measurement up.

  11. Literately found these stashed away in some drawer, so as an apology I’m wearing them for as long as I can before I get the urge to wear another pair and another pair (even though I just got a pair of oni high rise!!!)..must stop buying and start enjoying...

  12. Hi, big fan of the Iron Heart outlet store, which have made their denim more accessible to me so a big thank you. Here are my first Iron Heart pair - 1955 UHR that I have been working on for a while, I did a couple of bath soaks but I always felt they were a bit too roomy in the thigh area. Recently I did a proper hot machine soak and they came out perfect and I thanks to the cold weather they have been my go to denim since. They are super soft and comfortable but have stretched out quite a lot so I may give them another month or so before giving them another hot soak:

Waiting in the wings are 2 other purchases I have also obtained from the outlet store, the first is the IH-634-DD a duck canvas, I don't know too much about them apart from when I googled the fades they look very intense. I'm thinking whether to cuff or stuck these because of the fading potential. The material itself is very rigid, I'm trying to tell them who the boss is but it might take a few months!

The last purchase - IHxB01xRAW (18oz) have a great feel to them, much more texture to them then the 1955 and a much more of a slim cut too. I've soaked them and I am hoping they will give more stretch in the thigh as they on the border of being a little too tight. I read in the Iron Heart forum that they were going to become extinct, I guess they weren't very popular? But if they give a little bit in the leg (and I manage to loose a little myself), I will be really happy with these, as from what I've seen they have great fade potential:
