  1. A pair of braces / suspenders made of crust cowhide from a long shut tannery (the straps) and crust calfskin (the ‘rabbit ears’ and attachments) and decorated with a couple of antique silver Japanese coins

The cowhide is a real old fashioned pit liming and tanning - some of the hide still had hair on. It’s amazing stuff, nothing like it and never will be again.

They say it’s an  ‘industrial’ iron buckle cut from a plate and pressed.
I guess that explains the price.

The word industrial is just sales patter - if it’s pressed then it’s steel, that’s the norm. It’ll explain the price if it suits your purpose 👍

Does anyone have experience with belts from Trophy Clothing?

30,000 yen feels a little on the high side but I do like the buckle a lot.

Not sure what kind of ‘experience’ you’re meaning but the buckle looks similar in style to those used by The Flat Head, Real McCoys etc. Probably Himeji leather.

If it’s a genuine pressed steel buckle then those are more expensive than brass or zamak

I was gonna throw @Duke Mantee in as a solid nomination too @superfuture

Not a chance - I’m an intolerant cantankerous old cunt … I’d ban everyone just because I could

Of course there is a softer side to me (my grandfather was born in Manchester, and I’ve since discovered that even a full blood transfusion isn’t sufficient to get all of the English out) so I’d probably reinstate some of the nice guys … like you mate 😉

Is there any meaning of xx in the model number?  Also, wonder why warehouse is appealing to you compared to the other Osaka 5 as the listed price is relatively high.  I guess the accuracy on the details is a big thing?

XX was the name of the early overalls made by LS&Co - I think that might be right up to 1900 or so, but there’s quite a few guys on here a lot more knowledgeable so they’ll probably add to that.

  8. … and this was definitely lost in the changeover - albeit they’re shitty pics because I am old and forgot to take ‘proper’ pics before it was shipped to Japan

Perhaps for its perceived exclusivity/rarity?  Retailers selling it on the fact its not as well known as Warehouse etc?

Either that or FW dictating the prices prior to distribution.

Freewheelers definitely produce in smaller quantities than say Warehouse, but I’m not sure there’s an ‘exclusivity’ factor being applied - although I think you might be (partially) correct on the pricing aspect - it seems to me (some) retailers outside of Japan are buying at Japanese retail prices ie the price we would pay … and then adding their markups

Smart maybe, but that's broadly considered a pretty shitty thing to do unless you're supporting the shop through other means…

I think having a local shop to try things on at is well worth the markup, when you're figuring out whether a new brand (or a new style) works well for you. Sure, I'll usually transition to buying direct once I've figured out sizing and all that, but it's often cheaper to try on a shirt from a new brand and pay a 40% markup if it works or $0 if it doesn't than it is to pay full price plus shipping and take the hit on trying to resell it later if it doesn't work out—not to mention the whole hassle. That sort of service / convenience is money well spent, as far as I'm concerned.

I’m thinking more why it seems to be (primarily) Freewheelers garments that are marked up to such an extent. I don’t see the same action on Warehouse, Sugar Cane etc.
