  1. During lockdown 2020.. i was still popping into work during the day while my wife and kid were doing homeschool.. he would have been 11yrs old at the time, one cold January evening, i took him on a night hike in the Peaks.. it was Friday night so no school the next day.. he'd done the Joe Wicks workout but still had lots of energy to burn off.. We left the car in the carpark at the end of the Burbage valley and took a route i've done 100s of times in the past.. it was around 7pm but pitch black and icy.. on the home stretch we were climbing up some rocks (a section he loves) he was up front carrying our massive search and rescue light .. i was behind him just in case he slipped with a poxy little torch.. when we got to the top, he shouted "Wooo! Parkour" and started jumping from rock to rock while i climbed up the last section.. when i got to the top, i could see his torchlight was way off in the distance so i shouted "stay where you are" and i made my way to him cutting through the heather loosing the path in the darkness and completely lost our bearings.. i could see a road in the distance so i thought.. it'd be safer / easier to figure out where we were from the road than waist deep in heather .. this was a period when i didn't have a phone and he'd left his phone in the car.. Whoops! .. familiarity breeds contempt thought i It was so dark that even from the road i had no clue whether we should turn left or right.. one way is the road to Sheffield.. the other is the road to Manchester, i was 80% sure we should turn right but i spotted a light from a remote farmhouse in the distance and said (mainly to try and teach him a lesson) if you ever find yourself in this situation never wander off into the Peak District.. especially when it's -10°.. anywho.. we got to this farmhouse.. this was the era of peak covid paranoia.. and knocked on the door, the farmer was quite surprised to see a 40 something year old man and an 11yr old boy at 10.30pm.. he drew us a map to get back to the Burbage carpark.. (and gave me a bit of a lecture about being more responsible in future ) .. surprisingly it was the complete opposite way to where i thought we should be going (lesson learned or so i thought) .. and off we went .. any other time, i'm sure he would have just given us a lift.. we were following his map but nothing seemed familiar.. i saw no other cars on the road.. then all of a sudden the carpark came into view and it was the carpark at the opposite end of the Burbage Valley.. Oh Fuck!!! ..but all was not lost there was a car in the carpark and it was all lit up with what looked like studio lighting rigs? when we got there, it was a freelance photographer with a drone and a sexy model.. they had the car on loan from Audi and they were filming a promo... she was stepping out of the car as the drone flew through the Peak District.. i asked him the time.. it was 12.30am, we explained the situation and they agreed to drive us around the Burbage Valley and back to our car.. We got home muddied and exhausted to a greeting of "where the fucking hell have you two been?"
  2. Here you go @Hopethisoneisnttaken https://www.dofe.org/about/our-story/# https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Duke_of_Edinburgh's_Award It's a bit like the Scout movement but with less penetration
  3. My kids friends were up on Burbage last night as part of their Duke of Edinburgh, they got these photos
  4. You should try an 86-repro with pleats and elasticated waist.
  5. That's what started the conversation Carl.. i walked into the kitchen and i heard him say "there's no such thing as a 3p mum" idk?.. so i said "there used to be.. it's what folks called the thrupenny bit, before i was born" he asked if there was any coins in circulation when i was a kid that no longer are.. Just the 1/2p .. Oh, and a £1 coin used to be a green banknote
  6. I was telling the boy about pre decimalised currency yesterday “before 1971 and long before I was born there was 240 pence to the pound.. but even when I was a kid we still had 1/2 pence so half of 1p” “I’ve got some old money in my toolbox at work, I’ll bring you a 1/2p coin home” When I gave it to him, he said “oh I thought it would look like a 1p cut in half.. sort of half moon shaped? “
  7. If you ask it anything to do with Sugarcane M-Series it directly quotes my archive
  8. Speaking of which.. This is the down vest I wear at work through the winter.. the grime build up is just incredible, I don’t wear it outside the workshop It’s Made in USA North Face from the early 90s.. back when they were a respectable mountaineering brand, my friend bought it to go up Mont Blanc.. started running ultras, slimmed down so it was too big and gave it to me.. when it gets a puncture and starts loosing down, I superglue a little patch of gaffer tape over the hole, the silver tape eventually peels away but leaves the woven backing stuck to the pertex as a fix.. as you can see above^ gaffer tape patches old and new. I can’t wash it so every summer I buy a pack of baby wipes and scrub it down inside and out while wearing it.. then put it away for the summer.. It’s the epitome of make do and mend
  9. A down vest is an essential piece of kit for me.. sure merino base layers keep you warm, I wear one myself but not so easy to wriggle out of when you’re all hot and sweaty whereas a down vest can be whipped off and packed down to the size of a tennis ball.. also easier to wear a waterproof shell over a vest than over a down jacket… but mainly I need one to see me through the winter at work, it leaves my arms denimclad yet free to move.. if my arms were wrapped in pertex/ down jacket, they would be fked in a matter of days.
  10. Digital pet from the mid-90s.. everyone gets two weeks to try and keep it alive..
  11. They date between 2003 and 2007 GLWS.. if anyone buys them to wear, can i have the pocket flasher please? I don't want to pay for it but i will pay your postage costs or happy to swap for other pocket flashers
  12. Moved here to avoid derail.. I can't remember the RRP.. It's one of the few EG pieces which blew me away. Every season EG would release a plethora of multi-pocketed utility vests, some with hoods, some without, no different from last seasons offerings, but the design of this pop-over was something i'd never seen before from any brand.. thin enough to be worn as a layer or fat enough to keep you warm.. alas back in 2011 i had umpteen down vests and just didn't need another one.. it also generated a bit of hype over on SF which put me off.. a few years later Mr R started the Engineered Garments thread over on Denimbro (i don't know if it still exists or not) he was into those floral 3 piece suits (which i hated) .. i posted in the thread.. "the only EG piece which has stood out for me in recent years was the flak type vest.. if one ever pops up on Yahoo, i'll probably grab it" .. i got a PM from a forum lurker saying "i've got one which i can let go" .. i just can't remember if i bought it or swapped it without looking at my DB PMs. Re- the price tag.. I think what happens within the Japanese rag-trade.. bricks n' mortar vintage stores acquire garments either from their buyers who're scouting individual pieces or trade-ins and such.. if you look at 2nd.. they're certainly not buying bails of clothing by the Kg, it's all carefully selected brands.. i think these 'middle-men' also have an ebay presence.. take the seller of the EG vest for instance.. click 'sellers other items' the background in all the photos are different.. some items are hung up behind changing room curtains.. i'm pretty sure that seller doesn't have any of these items to hand.. they'll all be for sale at vintage shops around Japan and if you scour the interwebz hard enough, often you can find the same item for sale in JP at a fraction of the cost it's listed for on ebay.. also you'll often see 4 or 5 different Japanese eBay sellers listing the same item of clothing.. some of them just slap a silly price on it.. because it doesn't matter if they sell it or not because they don't own it.. it's just a markup or commission they're working for which is what's happened with the £3000 EG vest.
  13. Most of them turned to rags and ended up either in the bin or given away.. the only pairs i saved are a pair of CSF-46s, Junky 46s and FW-47s. I only saved those because they're a bit special but pointless really.. they're too delicate to wear for any longer than a day or two. I've been wearing Carhartt carpenters for work these last few years.. £35 from the vintage shop, it's much cheaper than burning through £200 pairs of denimz every 6mths, albeit much less interesting
  14. I always remember Crat would shine the shit out of the toe of his brogues to an almost mirror finish.. then go trout fishing in them.. someone on the forum commented.. "why on earth would you go fishing in formal shoes?!" and he replied.. "that's what they were designed for you idiot"
  15. Designed for the working classes if i remember rightly.. the small holes are to let water out while working in waterlogged conditions.. for folks working out in the fields.
