  1. Not speaking from personal experience, but based on the SExFH05, which also used the 1XXX denim, the denim stretches quite a bit (i.e. back to pre-soak measurements and then some).

  2. i'm debating whether i need size 30 or size 31... i wear size 31 in the samurai s710xx for example.

i definitely want them to fight like a straight cut and not like a slim cut, so i don't want to size down too much. what do you guys think?

I don't own any Samurai I think we're pretty similar in size. I'm a 31 for the Flat Head 1001, 31 for Eternal 811, and 31 for Iron Heart 9301.

This is my fit for the 3sixteen SL-100x in size 30:

  3. I want to buy a pair of SL-300s. How do they run size-wise? Are the measurements the same as for the indigo model? http://www.selfedge.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=82&products_id=438

They run the same as the 100x indigo denim (2 larger than tagged size). My ST-100x and ST-300 measured exactly the same; the 300 denim stretches a little more though, which you may want to take into consideration.

I think sizing down 2 from your true waist should give you a good fit.

  4. Must be a slow day at SESF...

About Denim Debate: I checked it out when it was first posted here and on SF, and just went back now only to be disappointed by the lack of updates/documentation. I assumed that updates would be more regular, kinda like the Sufu world tour threads. Maybe all of this crap debate going on here is because of the lack of denim updates to debate over there!

Also, anybody else find the blog/comments format a little clumsy (e.g. the "Welcome to the Denim Debate" post with it's 62 comments)? Unless the blog posts increase in frequency where comments can be made in context, the few blog posts on there are going to end up like a disorganized Sufu thread.

  5. Dead Stock

Why hello, what do we have here?

    img1366l.jpg

These were hiding in a shop in Hong Kong.

The grey Crosscut flannel is hands down one of my favourite shirts. When I found these, I had to get the red one and at the price I just had to get both.

    img1369.jpg

The red is equally as stunning as the grey.

Such a classic shirt paired with great fabric; the wool has a speckled appearance, like salt and pepper (I think 3s had an S&P theme going on for that season, haha). I'm sure if they could find anymore of the fabric they'd make more.

There's no thread yet dedicated to Stussy Deluxe denim, but having handled a couple of pairs they are certainly worth checking out:

    - Japanese selvage denim

    - Made in Japan

    - Custom buttons and rivets

I already had several other pairs of denim to choose from as my next pair to break in, but these were so intriguing I just couldn't pass them up. I couldn't afford the SExIH07BK, so I present to you The Poor Man's Black Year:

Stussy Deluxe Overdyed Slim Fit Denim

Black Overdyed Indigo Under certain light you can already see the indigo hairs poking through the black overdye.

  7. I wonder about the effects of Rakuten on the Japanese market. Surely there must be some Japanese consumers who miss out on products because they were sold to a foreign market. It's probably not as big of a deal for products that have been on the market for a while (e.g. stock from previous seasons/years), but it must suck for some Japanese dude when some guys from across the world buy up all of the stock in his size before he even has a chance to make it out to Hinoya to check out the fresh Mister Freedom gear.

In all fairness though, this could also happen with Self Edge, or any other retailer that serves a local and international market. I just don't imagine someone from Japan paying the markup for something that was exported from and imported back to their country.

The wonders of the global economy...

  8. 3sixteen SL-100x, Lot 001 @ 1 year.

I remember when I first got these; they were my second pair of raw denim. I was apprehensive about the fit at first and so I didn't wear them regularly. Then I tried cuffing them, a look which I didn't think I would be into. I even got shit from one of my coworkers about it, saying that I should have bought jeans with the proper length inseam. Well, fuck'im, the look grew on me and soon my first pair of raws were cast aside and I found myself wearing the SL's daily.

I've enjoyed wearing these for the better part of the last year (at least 5 days a week). I wore them for everything from traveling to Japan to working underneath my car. I now understand the beauty of a pair of jeans that ages with you. For inquisitive minds, these were washed a handful of times, mostly by hand, with the first wash at six months and monthly washes thereafter.

Enough talking. Here are some photos.

    The last shall be first.

The Kaihara denim doesn't produce very high contrast fades. The fades are subtle, but the combs are still visible and some train tracks are peeking through. I like that the fades are visible on the selvage outseam on the inside, and that the indigo bled through behind the knees.

    img1136n.jpgimg1079t.jpg

The custom fly buttons with the "3S" insigina are one of my favorite features of these jeans. I noticed that the later lots, and even Lot 001 of the ST's only have the 3S button for the top fly button, unlike the Lot 001 SL's. When I've finally worn these to rags, I think I will salvage the buttons as a memento of the jeans. I really like the deeper shade of indigo here:

    img1073j.jpg

Again, the customized rivets add a nice touch. I saw some detail shots of the SL-200 which appeared to have plain rivets. Hopefully that was just a one-off because the customized hardware makes the jeans that much more special. Again, the depth of colour in the indigo is mesmerizing.

    img1074u.jpg

Probably my favourite sign of wear on the jeans: some fraying of the warp yarns where the jeans were cuffed. I guess this is from the stitching on the inside of the hem rubbing against the denim (from the double cuff). The roping at the hem isn't very pronounced; the chainstitch started to unravel shortly after I started wearing the jeans, so I think the tension which usually produces roping was lacking. You can see the white thread my aunt used to keep the chainstitch from unraveling.

    img1138e.jpg

The Tanner leather patch is thick and gorgeous. It really has aged well with the denim and contrasts nicely against the indigo. I could stare for hours just admiring the shades of indigo in the denim. There's a bit of a greenish hue which creates a lovely colour.

    img1083p.jpg

By no means am I finished wearing these jeans, but I think I'm ready for a new denim voyage. I will probably wear these in rotation with a new pair of jeans as my go-to pair. While technically not my first pair of raw denim, these really were my first. And you know what they say, you never forget your first.

    Until next time...

  9. Started the morning off by going to the dentist and getting a cavity filled (no pics). Swung by Best Buy on the way home to pick up something, but they were sold out. I ended up having to take a 1 hour, 40km detour home all in the name of this:

Washed my jeans and a chambray:

Grandma's been hogging the TV so looks like TvC will have to wait till tomorrow.

  10. Laundry day

My KMW chambray was due for a wash, and my 3sixteen SL-100x turned one year old: an occasion worthy of a handwash for both of these garments.

    Follow these instructions.

    img1042hw.jpg

    OK.

    img1046p.jpg

The 3sixteen's got a thorough wash in the tub. I start by turning them inside out and putting them on.

    img1048ic.jpg

I washed them with regular bar soap, and this hemp cloth which I normally use to shower with. Basically, I'm taking a shower with my jeans on. I've flipped them back out now to wash the outisde.

    img1050ma.jpg

    The aftermath.

    img1055s.jpg

It's not really visible here, but the hemp cloth took in a lot of the indigo from washing the jeans

    img1060td.jpg

The KMW chambray got a regular hand wash with bar soap. Here's the sink after the wash.

    img1054nr.jpg

I flipped the 3sixteen's back inside out, wrung them dry, and threw them into the dryer.

    img1061w.jpg

The KMW chambray is hung to dry in the shower.

  11. Stay tuned, boys and girls.

    One year hand wash
