Bargain. I had a pair of buckle back LVC I got from TK Maxx, due to a mix up my wife sold them at a car boot for £2.50 :o

Ha!  I think I might be the antipodean @generic_guy – in addition to my precious lucky clothing finds getting "rationalised" or disintegrating while awaiting their moment, I had a beaten-up but very playable (and beautiful-sounding!) '60s Maton parlour guitar that I liberated for $20 (so, 10 quid or less)... my wife chose to display it in the lounge room... finally! some recognition for not only my valuable precious things, but my impressive skills as a glaneur!... and then contrived to knock it onto the hard floor while vacuuming the next day, where it broke into several irreparable pieces.

In her favour, she does often suggest that I change into my most faded SC47s rather than the crispy rigid jeans I've selected for whatever occasion I'm feeling the need to wear "good" jeans to (What..? these are edo-ai, I go to so much troub.. oh, all right. Just for you)

  2. @Broark, have to concur with @Double 0 Soul on the Sugarcane; that's a good basic belt, you can feel secure in the knowledge that you're straight fire without drawing undue attention to the fact. UES do a good one at a similar price, but the buckle is rather square and the leather is thicc – feels nearly twice as much as the SC! You could also thread the Tender the opposite way round (so the buckle is upside down), but that is challenging and deprives you of the excuse to buy another belt.

Knuckle duster back pocket fades are like the coolest shit, do you sell switchblade combs too?

As a kid, I used to dream of ordering those from the back pages of Li'l Lotta comics along with x-ray specs, Chinese finger traps and sea monkeys

Really into the new khaki Deck Worker jacket, trying to find a 44 that'll ship to the US...

Corlection now has this jacket, in this colour – but only up to 42 (which they describe as "XL"). Might be worth checking with them if they'll be getting more, or at least measuring up the 42 to see if it runs large. They would definitely ship to the US.

  5. @Duke Mantee, I used to work down the road from Sydney's largest childrens hospital, which happened to be a teaching hospital. For my job at the time, I sat in on a similar operation (hole in the heart) for an 8-y.o. girl – a real privilege. Hospital staff who do this every day display a level of easy professionalism seldom encountered in any other field – I remember the surgeon telling me that "this little heart is the happiest it's possible to be right now... taking a break for the only time in 80 or 90 years with a team of professionals at the ready". Always nerve-wracking for parents, but strictly routine right when you need it to be.

  6. Heh... I was thinking about this topic recently... in the time I've been on SuFu, I've gone from being single to producing a now-13-y.o. son who is about to overtake me in height (6'2") and looks better—and has put more wear—in his 32x32 LVC 54z than I ever did. Pretty decent evo, dad...

  7. So, to add to the guitar strand of this thread—and I must apologise for the awful iPhone pics, but it's all I had to work with—here's my '72 mahogany Thinline. When my mum died, my dad gave me some money aside from the amount that went on bills and family expenses and told me to get something for myself that she would have liked. "She always liked to hear you playing at night" (perhaps my only true fan!—I was deep into flamenco at the time, but that's probably another post or another topic altogether)... so I found this, from the original owner, who had long since put the guitar aside in favour of fishing. This was the only year of production for the combination of wood and pickups. I've not seen another in Australia—he bought it with him new when he came here from the UK. It's as close as I could get to a birth year guitar (I'm a '71 model, myself).

The strap should probably go in the leather goods thread—it was made by a local lady who did leatherwork for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, who feels that pelham hooks (as used in saddlery) are the best fastening for such things... I have to agree!

Next up is a Shin-ei Resly Tone from the same period. This was an early circuit from Fumio Mieda, who is still around and applying his genius to Korg products. He had made the Uni-Vibe a few years prior, which in turn was descended from "The Psychedelic Machine": a fuzz/tremolo/phase device intended to capture Mieda's remembered impressions of Radio Moscow broadcasts, and the way they modulated strangely as they bounced off the ionosphere (I am not making this up; I wish I had the imagination! this is why I love the guy so much). Mieda used a light bulb to modulate the audio circuit, and spent much time searching for globes that had a "decay" time as they switched off that would translate to a useful musical effect. As far as anyone knows, he was the first to use optics to mediate audio effects, which in my opinion puts him up there with whichever mad genius created the optical sound tracks that ran down the side of celluloid film strips.

Anyway, this device is a tremolo, vibrato, and.. erm, "Resly" pedal, because it sounds somewhat like a rotating Leslie speaker. Still sounds great, but I don't use it frequently as much of it is irreplaceable. Actually, Shin-ei has rebooted as a brand and seems to be making reproductions of their Uni-vibe, so maybe they've got access to those old light bulbs... Mieda says he eventually found a medical equipment supplier, but a lot's changed since the 60s.

@mondo Nice! I’m assuming you got them from Maple? If so, it’s a hell of a deal. Can’t go wrong with that.

Ha.. that's correct – I keep forgetting local stores are now global; I'm within walking distance of Maple. It was easier to take advantage of the free postage in this case, though. The jeans themselves... well, it ain't pretty (particularly not in the hot and humid weather we've been having), but I can get them done up, and once they are they don't feel too constrictive in the top block. Some of that is probably down to stiff buttonholes on the fly, but it won't hurt for me to stick to my intended plan of getting back to pre-COVID shape. And if I really can't manage that by the time I'm done with the contest TCBs, I should be able to move them on – although realistically, I've never sold a pair of jeans once they've been sucked into my denim acquisition vortex.

Anybody else wants a pair, Maple have them in 30, 31, 32, 33 and 34, although there's only one each of the last three sizes. International postage would possibly be about AUD$40, but you'd be getting Edo-Ai for USD$245 at most.

  9. ouch, @buler..! considering it was sprayed a solid colour originally, it looks like nice wood in the body (Fender often used less appealing bodies under custom colours because they wouldn't be seen anyway)...I'd be tempted to refinish as a sunburst or Mary Kay and relic to fit in with the rest of the guitar, but if you know it was DR it would be good to return it to its former glory. Shredwin's friend could do it.. MJT do good work, too, I've a nice La Cabronita from them. Probably Brazilian rosewood on that neck, too... nice.

@mondo Completely understand. I should have clarified that it felt slimmer to me from mid thigh down. Also, when comparing the denim, the Edo Ai's seem to have less give than the 2014 Jean. My 2014's haven't stretched that much but I also haven't given them as much wear as they deserve.

 I ended up pulling the trigger... based on your measurements plus the usual sources they come up about the same as my 2009s except for the waist (about an inch less) – I've had pairs of SC47s with weirdly tight waistbands that have eventually stretched out. At half price, I guess I could make my money back if they really don't fit!
