  1. Mate, I've washed samurai 710xx & 5000vx plus a pair of pbj 012 (all raw, unsanforised) in a machine inside out at 40 with a little bit of APC x Aesop fine fabric care liquid - no ill effects whatsoever. I used a hand wash setting each time.

I also put the 5000vx on a spin cycle (800 revs) for agitation purposes to get a little extra shrink. This might have caused a tiny bit more indigo loss but no other noticeable effects.

My denim is washed as required (every few weeks usually) and I use this method each time.

My jeans don't really fade for shit though but I think that's more down to the easy life they have than my washing regimen...

  2. Hi Danny, just sorting out my next intended acquisitions... Still on for the 3sixteen kibata selvedge? Also rumour has it you may be getting the indigo heavyweight t shirts from 3sixteen too, any truth to this? If so with or without pocket?

Ps congrats on the IH collab - looks amazing (love that patch). Might have to try a pair next time I'm on the manor!

  3. Fuck, that was close - haven't been on here for a while and almost missed this. Order made!

Edit: just noticed, shame about the buttons. Not quite a deal breaker for me (in the same way that dodgy patch/selvedge/arcs would have been) but a bit disappointing. Oh well, as has often been said about this, "it's all about the fabric"...

  4. Also bear in mind the 11's are left hand twill so they will fade differently. Not better or worse, just different.

The one wash version will have had a pretty good industrial wash process to clear all the shrink, and this process will have considerably more effect than just a household soak.

The grey weft changes the hue slightly but having tried a pair on (at rivet and hide) i can say they still looked like a pair of indigo jeans, just with a twist...

No better way to build up some courage before hand than some 'Metal' beer. Might have had a couple of these...

  7. Ah, I see what you mean.

I think you've got the same issue as me in not liking jeans to sit too low on your hips (and the subsequent saggy arse possibilities) - meaning you pull them up higher than they are designed to sit and use the belt pulled tight to hold them in place. Exactly what I was doing and one of the reasons that, with great regret, I gave up on my '12's.

Oddly though, my 3sixteens (st120) have identical rise measurements but I don't have this issue at all with them. Maybe because they are not quite as slim through the legs which means they hang better (on me) I'm not sure.... The 12's kinda felt that they were tight around and held up by my thighs (for a skinny dude I've got quite big thighs) meaning the wider waist designed for the lower rise 'gaped' making me want to yank them up all the time. Hence the belt pulled tight... They would not 'drop' and sit on my hips as the design intended because they couldn't get past my thighs.

  8. @ cadence - personally I see what you mean, although this arrangement is pretty much standard. My (wife's) xx012 have one central loop at the rear and one set all the way over on the right and left hip. Doesn't seem to be causing any belt problems.

My 3sixteen st120's have a loop just off centre both left and right at the rear and the patch itself is basically an extra loop too. I think I prefer this set up, wether or not it has any benefit but that's purely personal taste over function I would say.

  9. ^ I've ordered stuff from all of those places in the past and while it's true to say they know their fashion they are not in any way denim experts.

They are probably using different ways of measuring the jeans as there are a few different techniques.

Find a link for measuring jeans and send it to each place asking them to measure using the guide you send. Then you should have a more accurate comparison.

Bear in mind also that each pair will have slight variations so a (slight) difference from pair to pair is to be expected.

Edit: don't forget to measure a pair of your own jeans using the same method you send to give you a control set of measurements to compare against.

  10. It's especially confusing for people new to/getting into the game.

Why do we buy products like PBJ in the first place?

Trusted, high quality materials and construction? small runs where standards are possible to maintain? Exclusivity of a non mainstream brand? The ethos behind the brand? Support of the 'little guy' business model? A mixture of all of these reasons and many more I suspect...

Basically all of the things you lose from a mass market brand, even a so called 'quality' mass market brand be it uniqlo, matalan, h & m, gap whatever...

That's what I meant by damaging PBJ's reputation. Not for people who are involved enough to fully research and/or use forums like this but for those thinking of dipping their toe in, doing a quick google search or similar and seeing an association with a bog standard high street store.

I think it's fair to say that the sort of people who are looking to get into this game are usually the sort of people to do their homework so it shouldn't really be TOO much of an issue but that doesn't justify it or make it any less snide.

  11. So, technically and legally legit, but morally bang out of order...

Associating a brand like uniqlo with PBJ is not going to make me any more likely to shop uniqlo, but would make me less likely to buy PBJ and I imagine this would be the case for most. They are obviously just hoping to trap the unwary and uninformed and are not concerned about the possible consequences to PBJ's reputation and name.

    Sneaky.

  13. Ha ha! She loves them Danny!

We will be coming back to London for a week around 2nd week of September for our anniversary celebrations. On top of the list of places we BOTH want to visit is your store, so I can hopefully give your suggestions a try then.

  14. ^ yep, Before my wife pinched em and shrunk em down some more, the waist on my tag 29 012's had gone to 31".

I was considering dropping to a 28 for the 009's. The more I think about it the more I know I'm just going to get them and learn to embrace the extra room... Bit scared to drop 2, my body shape is very slim but quite muscular which can mean it looks like I'm trying too hard if clothes are too form fitting.

I've got a feeling they will end up like my samurai 5000vx though - I like everything about them except the looser fit - and now I just laze around the house in them and swap them when I go out.

21oz denim worn as sweatpants - what is wrong with me?!

  15. I'm starting to get the horrible feeling that although PBJ have by far my favourite denim, they don't actually make a cut for me.

12's are too loose at the top block and tight from thigh down - they look much better on my wife...

I was looking to get some 009, but judging from Johns 003's above, which I believe are the same cut they will be far too loose. No offence meant mate - they fit you very well and they look exactly as a good, classic cut should, but it's not for me.

The 007s could be the answer, I've yet to try a pair but if the top block to knee ratio is similar to the 12's it's not going to work.

Really hoping there is an answer to this cos that denim is just TOO nice not to own!

  16. @ Max, they chain stitched both my 710's (which I later had hemmed again to lose another inch or so) and my 5000vx. Did a fine job too I think. Can post a couple of pics later if you like?
