    yep. disgust.

a different sort of disgust than what i feel when you talk about how you're a) married, and B) love thailand where you can fuck half the female population for $500, but whatever... it's disgust all the same.

oops - we're not in supertrash, are we?

Ok Mr. Nice Guy....he said that because IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW; mods said that any non-fashion related threads would be locked....he was being sarcastic

yes, i know. i watched the "bomb afghanistan" thread you posted in with a fair amount of disgust.

this is a directly fashion-related thread, though, so calling out for mods seemed like a pretty cheap way out of an argument he couldn't win. just IMO. [EDIT]i copy that CMF - disregard the preceding sentence.

why should you be judged for something that another white person did 50 years ago? well, you shouldn't be judged for it, but you should have the decency to acknowledge that you reap some serious benefits from the bullshit that white guy did 50 years ago, and that other people have a right to resent that.

Whilst you have provided very logical and relevant points, don't EVER think/say that it is okay for whites to be discriminated against; white or not, no one "can afford" to be ridiculed/insulted as a result of their physical traits....people nowadays have this mentality that it is impossible to be racist towards white people, and it makes me fucking sick.....I see it every day here in LA; I can't shop ANYWHERE in Koreatown, many black people around where I used to live (South Central) won't even answer you if you talk to them, etc.....it is messed up....so don't even think about pulling that card, it is completely illogical.

never said it's ok. didn't even imply it.

what's implicit in my statement is that each white person who laughs at a joke/caricature of another white person a) does that of their own free will, and B) feels ok laughing at it because it's not directly threatening to their status.

i don't laugh at that shit personally.

i don't see how this ISN'T an issue. it's bullshit that this stuff gets by. if it was a black shoe, with a caricature of a black person, people would be going ape shit. i don't see how any of this can even be considered ok. it's unfair that asians can be subjected to this type of stereotyping and people aren't held responsible at all.

--- Original message by ddohnggo on Apr 7, 2006 09:38 AM

    I completly disagree.

and I'm not sure about the buck tooth thing, but asians do have slanted eyes.

Hypothetically if a shoe was made in Asia in a completley different paradigm in the white series featuring a redneck charicature how would people act? I wouldn't care, but I can see some white folks who live there getting up set. Who knows, I have no clue what it's like over there.

you "completly[sic] disagree." congratulations! you offer startlingly clear support for your argument!

    [EDIT] (you edited your post)

i'm going to make an assumption here, so PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong. based on your posts about your t-shirt designs, company, etc. and your use of the phrase/possible business name "suburban jewish afro," i'm guessing you're jewish? in all honesty, are you saying that if i put some greedy shylock-type caricature on a shoe, replete with yarmulke, hooked nose, hasidic curls, hoarding all the world's money and power, that the jewish community would not be offended? that they wouldn't issue a statement denouncing me as a shoe maker and encouraging a boycott of my products until i apologized and removed the shoe from circulation?

    please.

and your earlier comment about affirmative action? replace "money for college for racial minorities in the US" with "money for young, poor, creative types to do their thing in Canada" (your possible grant for your business) and explain the difference to me.

if there was a white shoe with a caricature of a honky on it im sure the white population would get the joke and give it a good laugh.

and its not really racist if the shoe is stating the obvious... its not like people are having an epiphany over the shoe... asian people do have slanted eyes and a (often described as) yellowish tint to their skin... and then anyone can have buck teeth...black, white, yellow, red, brown, or green

re: your first point: you're probably right.

you forget to mention, however, that the white population can afford to laugh at it because in most of the western world, they are the race with the greatest privilege...

your second point is just ridiculous. "asian people do have slanted eyes" so the logical conclusion you draw is that it's cool to mock them for it? the larger point is not that noticing that slanted eyes, or yellow skin, or difficulty pronouncing certain consonants in the english language are common to people of asian descent is racist; it's that all of these "traits" form a part of a larger, fundamentally racist and disparaging view of an entire people, and call to mind a history of violence and discrimination wherein these "obvious" traits are signifiers.

  7. always good to rock different styles. if nothing's going to shrink any further, hem a pair so it falls right at your heel. most tailors will offer the "keep the original hem" service, which isn't perfect, but looks the same until you get real close to it...

i see american apparel is mentioned.. i dont want to hate.. but do you guys actually like that shit(not ment derogatively) i just find it to be very low quality... or maybe just cause its soo light weight.. just wondering yall opinions

i do a lot of business with a screenprinter and have most of my stuff printed on AmApp shirts... the quality is definitely suffering at the moment, as they've grown just ridiculously fast over the last two years and can't really keep up.

fyi, quality and thinness have nothing to do with each other - AmApp's jersey material is made from a higher quality combed cotton, which gives it a softer hand and allows it to be woven more thinly while being just as durable. IMO most of the quality problems with AA are due to the construction, not the fabric itself.

check out alternative apparel for a company doing something similar to AA, but on a much smaller scale. for hoodies and sweats, check continental-usa.com.

  9. my tailor in portland's done some great work on two pairs of jeans for me - basically taking bootcuts and turning them into straight legs or slight tapers - with no problems. i had one done from the inside seam and one from the outseam and they both worked fine. just ask your tailor if they're comfortable doing it, and make sure you don't just say, "take this from a 25cm opening to a 20cm opening," - try the jeans on and have them pin the opening and lower leg to where you want it.

    bring on the male anorexics!

    yes. that's fucking skinny.

jesus. i'm 5'10", decently muscled and without much fat, and i'm 175lbs. if you're nearly 30 pounds less, you're skinny (especially if you're not 16 with a metabolism that's off the charts).

ehhh how can say that they are pretty much straight when they ARE bootcut? It makes NO sense at all.

    dumbest.

    thread deterioration.

    ever.

in the english language, the phrase "pretty much" can function as a slight modifier; i.e. the RR is a bootcut with such a slight increase in diameter from knee to hem that's it's "pretty much" a straight leg... jesus h. christ this is stupid - if you don't understand idiomatic expression in the english language, maybe you shouldn't comment on it?

witts, i stand by my original suggestion (confirmed by mlproject and ted di biase). if you want to wear your RRs with slip ons, starch the fuck out of the jeans from the ankle to the hem so they crumple and stay that way...

  14. in my case, probably not... but i like to soak all my new jeans as a bit of a personal insurance policy against migrating honeycombs / really expensive capri pants...

unless you soak your jeans in boiling water for 8 hours, you're not going to lose much indigo, but depending on a lot of other factors (sanforization, fabric weight, cut, etc.) you might lose some length.
