  1. However, please feel free to substitute a classic oxford, seersucker, or poplin dress shirt

Not dress shirts. All of those are considered casual shirts, except perhaps the poplin dress shirt, which is one of the only cases where you don't look stupid in a dress shirt and jeans. But even then, it's gotta look casual (i.e. not too long, slim in the arms and darted back) like something from Costume National.

A dress shirt is generally one with a longer, more spread collar, a smooth, solid fabric, and is meant for formal situations. French cuffs, no pockets, no button-down collars, simple fabrics, extra LONG because it's meant to be tucked in, etc. Ever driven by a club with a cover charge and a dress code? Tons of dudes wearing baggy long shirts that look like pillow cases. That's what you want to avoid.

It's cool though, I remember when I was still in 5th grade I thought everything with a collar and buttons on it was a dress shirt so I won't get on your case like you're getting on mine.

To the person who scoffed at "bootcut, no tapered," I got a good laugh from that. Short people, especially of the slightly pudgier variety tend to look like they've got two sausages attached to their hips when wearing tapered jeans. Consider that not everyone has the physique to wear tapered jeans, and if you recommend them to someone who's a newbie they might go out and make a huge mistake. I wear tapered, skinny jeans, but I'm tallish and skinny.

Also, bootcut is a very loose definition. Traditionally it means a straight leg wide enough to fit over boots, though they can flare to some degree. Look at 5EPs, which have a wider leg opening than the knee length, yet are subtle and flattering.

You may be more concerned with what fit is most popular at the moment, but consider the fact that more popular on the runway does not mean more flattering on the average person.

Damn, I feel like LA Guy. :D

  2. I wish I could put together my words on how I feel about these photos as well as OMC, but I guess all I can say is that I'm fond of these photos. They have some bit of glamour and sex in them but not in such a misogynist way that much fashion photography does. The way the model exists as a part of a photograph is pleasing, somewhat whimsical and very alluring, to say the least.

They express a different type of femininity than Bourdin's photos, and while the style might be similar, I don't think a comparison is in order. Comparing every fashion photographer to Weston or Bourdin is like comparing every modern pop band to The Beatles. Eventually the argument is going to get tired because it would be absolutely impossible to not be influenced by such prominent photographers.

I see the nastalgic, muted tones as an aesthetic choice and not necessarily indicative of a tribute or homage. I think they add directly to the distinction between photography or the photograph, and imagery, if that makes sense.

  3. Yep, the douchebag trend hoppers in SF just wear tighter fitting, more bohemian ish. Same evils though.

I rarely stop wearing something because of a trend out of hand, I just wear it in different context so that I won't look like I'm part of the same crowd.

  4. lately there have been some drunken hookups with girls ive known a long time

subsequently awkwardness avoidance and soured friendships :(

but it is just easier than going out and kicking it to strangers sometimes

There is one girl who I have consistently hooked up with every time we've seen each other when we're both single (and a couple times when she wasn't single). never ruined anything, thankfully. I generally text her the next day and say, "well that was a mistake. Let's not let that happen again," and then it happens again and again.

It's cool when you have friends you can bone and then forget that you boned them when you see them around or call them up.

  5. I hooked up with a girl last weekend, and she's been calling me every single day and I haven't answered a single call or responded to her text. I feel a little guilty.

fadingblue you get dumped? I just broke up with a gf of 2 years recently. not fun.

  6. what do you want me to wear instead to make it less bland? i need some constructive criticism rather than saying that it's bland. ;)

If someone has constructive criticism to offer, they'd probably PM it or post in the original thread. If someone brings it here, it's because they get pleasure from talking shit.

I bet the fit would look a lot better in different lighting. I agree with others that it's underwhelming, but I blame it on the picture. You can't see a single detail about the jacket or the sweater. I mean everything could have been body-huggingly tight and people wouldn't have said the same thing, but the problem would have been the same: in that photo you can't see the things that make those things expensive.

  7. I'm not sure who said it but canons have the two wheels one for aperture and one for shutter while the nikons have the one for both and you hold in a seperate button and turn the wheel for the aperture.

It's the exact opposite on every camera I've used.

  8. In the summer, some stores will be getting specialized jeans by 5EP made for the Styleforum (it is not required that you post at SF to buy the jeans). They'll be a true, slim striaght leg, built with 5EPs exceptional quality, with some improvements to the cut (slightly lower rise, perhaps some back pocket changes, and a slimmer seat and thigh).

  9. That was a great thread.

His little posse at Andy are bullies, embarrassing themselves with self-crowned titles like "Honors Members" while steadfastly holding onto their "gentelmanly ways".

And it would be best if the other little posses who offer nothing in the way of conversation aside from inane potshots from what they consider to be safe-zones didn't expand there territory and degrade the value of yet another forum.

  10. The only options I changed on my Thick as Thieves was sleeve length and trouser length, and I asked for 1" skinnier around the waist, so even though it's technically MTM, the fit right out of the box is pretty much the same.

Jason does some great work. I'm so pleased with my suit, I plan on picking up 2 or 3 more before the summer is over.

  11. Oh, was gonna say, the D80 and Nikons in general have some really sweet stuff.

Auto ISO, for one, when shooting in auto mode. Very very useful.

You can set the FUNC button to FV lock, which fires off a flash and locks the exposure, and while locked the flash will go off at the exact moment the picture is taken, instead of a millisecond before. REALLY helpful for taking pictures of people because their eyes will always be open during the exposure, since the picture is taken before they have the reflex to blink.

  12. I know. I really hate getting into these discussions, because like many other discussions when you're talking $1000+ investments, people can be very defensive about their "teams."

That said, the D80 has been getting better reviews pretty consistently, and the final decision is up to your opinion on how it feels for you to use it.

  13. The Nikon DX 18-55 3.5-5.6 is actually a great lens (note, not the DS 18-55, which comes with the D50). Very sharp, focuses fast, silent, almost no distortion and zooms quite well. I won't pretend to know a lot about Canon's, but from what I heard from my photo teacher (who, surprisingly has an arsenal of both Nikon and Canon equipment), the Canon EF-S 18-55 3.5-5.6 is only considered good because there's no competition below $1000.

  14. Ah, yea, lenses also play a big part. I know that all of Nikon's models support all of their lenses. And Canon's models don't really support their old lenses or something like that. And, Canon's beginner/non-pro lenses arn't that good, and they don't have a middle class lense, it's expensive lenses or nothing. While Nikon has the medium class or so.

So far, I'm going to the D80 kit with the 18-55mm lense. Then later on buy an 18-200mm lense.

It's actually the opposite, as far as I know. The newer Nikons cannot use a lot of the older lenses.

The 18-200 VR AF-S Nikkor lenses are actually getting made at a decent rate now, so chances of finding one this year is not bad at all. I plan to buy one myself - apparently the wait list is only 2 months or shorter now.

  15. It's a 18-55 3.4-5.6 lens on a 10mp DSLR. I can be as close to the subject as I need to be. I'll probably be shooting in 18mm so I can use the 3.4f aperture setting.

I used this camera to make 20" prints before @ ISO 200 and the quality was impeccable. No noise whatsoever... I imagine if I kept it under 640 it wouldn't be visible in print with noise reduction, which I didn't use during the last shoot.

I run it through a lot of filters in photoshop too, which hides any possible noise even more. Here is what the final images look like (don't harass me on the dodging/burning, I haven't finished it quite yet :D):

Of course it was way easier to get good exposure for the Kung Fu shoot because it was all outdoors.
