  1. I'm with riff on this one- boots should fit right out of the box. With a proper fit, your foot shouldn't push out past the welt stitching- that's a classic sign that they're too tight. Yes, leather will stretch and mold to the shape of your foot, but pressure on the ball of your foot and the pinky toe is just begging for problems down the road, like bunions, corns and other painful stuff.

  2. If you're asking about Iron Heart, yes. Definitely. IH denim has a loose weave that's surprisingly breathable and easy to wear. It feels much lighter than it is (comparable to some of my jeans in the 15-16oz range). Don't let the big number intimidate you- IH is wearable year round, and I live in Texas, where the summers are 90+ with 90% humidity.

If you're asking about some of the other brands that have heavyweight denim, I can't say.

  3. "Euro fit" means fitted. That suit is clinging on for dear life. Seriously, it's tight around the calves for gods sake. That's not right. We can see the outline of your pockets and can tell that you're wearing boxer briefs. No one in any business setting ever should be able to tell that. EVER. The shirt collar is bad. Get some collar stays, as previously suggested. And finally, I don't care how expensive it is, or how often you're using it, a pen goes in your inside breast pocket, never your outside one. It just looks ridiculous.

  4. Dude, the Lean Horse is serious business; that ain't just some piece of tin he picked up at a flea market. He got that for running 100 miles in less than 24hrs.

Other ultramarathoners would hunt him down and break his kneecaps if he sold it.

  5. Just ordered the S5000GX-T, hope they fit and somewhat slim!

I have a pair of the GX-K and I think they fit a bit slim. Of course, I gave mine a hot wash and tumble dry on high heat, so I probably got them to shrink more than most.

If you try them on and think they're too loose, I'd recommend doing the same, maybe even twice. You'll probably be able to get a fit you like.

  6. I kinda like keeping everything in one thread. It's too much of a time suck to try and follow a bunch of them (and I spend way too many hours clicking around on SuFu as it is). Yes, the purpose of the thread is to show footwear with some nice aging, and yes, there's been a lot of enthusiastic posting of brand new stuff. Heck, my only picture posting was of a pair that were fresh out of the box, so I'm as guilty as anyone.

However, I think this thread is still one of the best, and one of the most active. Even seeing tons of new boots is good, I think. We get to see them in different light, with various types of outfits, in lots of different environments. We get to see new angles and how they look when people of different skill levels take pictures. Any shoe will look good with perfect lighting, great camera equipment and a pro behind the lens, but only the truly beautiful will look good in bad light with a rank amateur wielding a crappy p&s.

I used to think that the White's SD looked clunky, but seeing them in a dozen different variations from a dozen different angles made me reassess the boots and now I love them. I might not have had that change of heart if we were only posting pics of pairs that were old and beat up. I guess what I'm saying is that even if it doesn't always match up to the original intent, this thread is pretty great as it is and I wouldn't want it to change, unless it was to entice people to post even more pics.

  7. lol yes and no.

ive ran a bunch of marathons and triathlons in the past 2 years.. summed up to 9 races total.. but never have i ran any like this..

i guess honestly im just trying to make this last race hard/special/memorable or however you want to put it..

so far these are on my for sure to do list:

-backpack with a bunch of beer + ice + food + camelbak bladder with nuun and water + a camera to record the memorable moments

-those crazy flipflops i posted above

-jumping in the water somewhere towards the end to "cool off".. then roll around in the sand, and then proceed to complete the race (this is the only race in america thats entirely along a beach on sand.)

the wearing denim part is still iffy to me.. and i definitely can see why you guys are like WTF?! about it. I guess in the end I'll just have to go on a long 10-15 miler practice run with them on and see how they feel...

but just in case i lose my mind and do wear my sexih07bks.. you guys better believe ill have a bunch of photos + videos for you guys :D

Surfside Beach? Should be a good time. Not sold on the idea of either the jeans or the sandals in a 50K, though. Sand is gonna thrash your feet.

  8. My 710s are on the way. Stoked. Need to get them hemmed though. I might take them down to Blue Owl in Seattle to get them chain-stitched along with my PBJ xx007. How much additional length should I leave for post-soak/wash shrinkage? 2inches?
...why don't you soak first, then hem?

Agreed. Soak first, then hem. Won't make any difference for the fading and will take the guesswork out of the process. To be really sure about removing shrinkage before hemming, give em a tumble dry, too.

  9. holy parsnips they come with a price tag! the nice one in your post is 34,000jpy(~$415)! Although if my japanese is correct they are handmade by badgers (I could be wrong).

C'mon, dude- can you really cheap out like that on something that's hand made by badgers? I mean, damn, that's gotta be worth some serious coin...

    :)

  10. Just as a random side note, I had a pair of those Jordans ages ago and that damn plastic pull on the back rubbed blisters on my heel every time I wore them. Still wore the crap out of them, though.

  11. ^^ Thanks for the replys but im pretty much sold on heavy weight unsanforized japanese denim! (GO HEAVY OR GO HOME! haha :D) I share the same passion that many of you have for the beauty of the natural patina that high quality denim and leather goods develop after years of love have been put into them. The idea of these products outlasting me is mind blowing! And the fact that these items are truly a product all our own is simply amazing to me! But I digress...

So is the consensus for the initial hot soak?

Would most recommend letting them dry on you? this is the first ive heard on this after hours on sufu but i could be looking in the wrong places....

I am really looking for any thoughts of what size of the IH-666s's I should get considering my waist and shrink factor? Come Feb. 1st ill be a proud owner of some IH-666s's I just dont know what size...

    Thanks again everyone!!

If you're worried about sizing and shrinkage, why not just go with the Iron Heart 301S (exclusively from Self Edge)? It's 21oz and sanforized, so a pair would be ready to wear straight off the shelf, no soaking or wet wearing required. Sizing is close between the 666 and 301, so if that's the fit you're looking for, it would be similar. Anyone at Self Edge would be able to give you specific sizing and fit advice, and Kiya, Andrew, Allan, Casey and the rest are all very helpful.

You should also consider contacting Giles at ironheart.co.uk. He's extremely helpful and as the worldwide distributor for IH gear, the definitive source for info on the brand.

I'm just getting into the denim game and I was wondering what the prices and availibility of Japanese denim is in Japan. Sounds kinda dumb but I was wondering if Brands such as samurai or momotaro are cheaper to buy in Japan, or if its less of a hassle. I might be in Japan in the next couple of months and was wondering if I should buy a pair now in the states or just wait it out for when I go to Japan

Yeah, buying in Japan will be cheaper and perhaps easier. If you do a search here on SuFu, there are a couple of threads about best denim stores in Japan and where to go and what to look for when shopping there.
