  1. Yeah, I think things are a bit crazy for them these days. When Victor and Sarah were in town a few months ago, he mentioned that they were trying to relocate to a larger space, plus they've got multiple denims they're designing with Cone for their fall releases. As for the Barney's 25th, well here's what Victor told me:

"we made one with Pima cotton for the Barneys COOP 25th year anniversary....should be out September or October and some of them will have real silver buttons and rivets. The head guy at the Cone mill said it was the most beautiful fabric they have ever made."

If you want to buy some Cone denim, I say wait for this, cause it's gonna be NICE.

  2. What's the consensus on a good patch?? 2 moving objects pulling apart a pair of jeans? 2 samurais holding swords against each other?

I'm betting that there's no consensus on what makes a patch good, but for me, 2 moving objects pulling apart a pair of jeans is the worst possible choice. I want a patch that shows some willingness to deviate from the Levis standard. With that said, it's probably no surprise that I like patches like the ones from Skull (unquestionably the best), Eternal, Momotaro and Oni. I also dig the minimalism of the patches from Raleigh Denim.

Functionally, I like heavier leather patches that are sewn down only at the top and bottom, so that they can operate as additional belt loops, and Iron Heart sets the standard on this score. I don't really care for specialty leather, like deer, goat, horse, python, baby unicorn, whatever.

The N-01 patches are just kinda dull, but I'm sure that Gordon will fix that for the next batch. He knows what he's doing. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a pair, if I weren't completely tapped out at the moment.

  3. Don't worry I wasn't referring to you. I meant the whole can't wear blah unless you do the job it was designed for 100 years ago argument.

It's cool. You didn't hurt my sensitive widdle feelings.:P Nonetheless, the answer to my question was there if I looked, so even if you didn't direct the comment at me, the lesson was still good.

  4. Well, both Imperial and 3sixteen make nice jeans, but what you should get kinda depends on what you're looking for. That price range gives you lots of options. Do you want a slim fit jean, something more traditional? Do you want really heavy or really light weight denim? You want black jeans or blue? Lots of choices. If you live in a place with a really good denim shop, for example, Self Edge and Blue In Green, if you live in NYC or San Francisco, your best bet would be to go there and try some stuff on. Otherwise, some more info would be helpful in getting a recommendation.

Oh, and the contest has its own thread here on SuFu:

  5. @aho- yeah, I'd be fine with that. The price isn't that much more than most of the denim we discuss around here anyway, and totally hand made is more interesting to me than the automated stuff. I'm also a fan of the small companies that are trying to keep American textile traditions alive; I grew up in NC and most of my relatives worked in mills at one time or another. It was sad to watch it all disappear.

  6. @tlieu, you're absolutely right; if I had an independent clothing company and J.Crew came knocking on my door, I'd jump all over it. Turning away a major clothing brand with a proven track record of success over decades would be dumb. Likewise, I'm not hating on J.Crew for making solid business decisions and trying to cater to and/or anticipate the desires of its clientele.

What I'm bothered by is the disingenuousness of this particular ad campaign. It seems to be stressing the rewards of putting time and effort into wearing a pair of raw jeans in order to get a great fit and appearance, yet at the same time, the vast majority of the clothes J.Crew sells are the antithesis of that attitude. It seems to me that J.Crew is essentially saying, "buy a pair of raw jeans and wear them every day for a year, then they'll go perfectly with our broken in chino shirt, vintage washed tee, aged leather belt and distressed Jack Purcells."

Don't try to convince me that I should pay more to break in clothes myself when you clearly don't believe it. That's what I'm hating on.

  7. Thanks for the heads up on the video; Victor and Sarah are seriously cool and the jeans they're going to be putting out this fall are going to be fantastic. I can't wait to pick up another pair.

  8. Sniff... sniff.... what's that I smell? Mmmmm, fresh marketing gimmickry. I love the smell of a new ad campaign.

Every single one of those guys looks like they've been professionally styled for the photo shoot to look like what J.Crew's target demographic (middle aged suburban yuppies) thinks designers, stylists and buyers should look like.

For me, the money quote comes from Eric when he's talking about his so-called "two years old" looking jeans: "You've got to earn it, son." Seriously? Does J.Crew even sell clothes that aren't preworn, prewashed, predistressed and "vintage"? The company's entire ethos is selling stuff that looks like you've had it for years, without all that pesky work of having actually owed/worn it for years.

J.Crew is still the Applebee's of clothing; indistinguishable from all the other middle of the road stores in the mall.

  9. searched the thread but didnt find anything, but has anyone tried on or own a pair of the momo 0905s? if so how do they compare to something like IH 634S would i fit a 34 in the momos if i wore a 34 in the IHs?

I've got a pair of the 0905s and I have a pair of the 634s on the way; I'll let you know how they compare when I get them. I ordered size 33 in both.

  10. Well, under normal circumstances, I'd be extremely jealous of the free autographed tshirt, but if what you went through is what a person has to do to get one, then I think I'll settle for purchasing a normal one.;)

Extremely cool of Kiya, Haraki-san and the whole Iron Heart community. Once you've got the shirt and the bloody patch framed, be sure to post a few pics; I'm sure we'd all love to see it.

Oh yeah, I hope your recovery is going well, too.
