  1. First, a Real McCoy's MFG Co. Horsehide A2 (Seal Brown), Size 40. BiG sells this for ~2k, and I'm selling mine for $850 shipped. This jacket's been worn only a handful of times, and I think the photos reflect that. Aside from a tiny nick here and there (likely from being next to other shirts/jackets in my closet) that will undoubtedly fade out, this thing is in perfect condition. More pictures are available upon request. Measurements at BiG are accurate.

Finally, white leather Flat Head Googies sneakers, size 9.5. These run big; this is the same size I wear in White's boots. I bought these from the Self Edge basement last summer, and I just never wear them (I've worn them maybe 7 times). They're probably the most well-built sneakers I've ever seen. 55 Shipped.

  2. I'm packing for a move from New York to California this week, and I stumbled across these things: white leather Googies sneakers, size 9.5. They're pretty incredible, but I find that I *never* wear them. If anyone's interested, send me a PM because I'm willing to let them go for very little. I just need some extra cash for the move (foot not included). 4055670B-4987-4DF5-AABB-E1511F1D083D_zps

  3. Ebisu, Meguro, Nakameguro, Daikanyama. Really depends on what you are looking for. Do you wanna be within walking distance to clubs? Do you want good food within walking distance? Do you have to be able to walk to denim daddy places? Do you want to go super urban (as in scramble intersection / shibuya crazy) or a bit residential (residential by tokyo's standard is still SUPER urban).

What are you planning on doing there - is the question.

Like, Berlin is case in point. If you wanna go shopping and be reasonably close to nightlife, mitte is the way to go but if you just want to party your night away and do a bit of shopping then xburg area would be better, you know.

i've used airbnb in tokyo many times. usually staying in central shibuya & surrounding areas (dogenzaka, shibuya-minami, jinnan, daikanyama, ebisu. also stayed in meguro for a few days).

herp nailed the first point: figure out what you want to do while there. needa know what you intend to do in your free time before anyone can really make neighborhood recs.

as far as staying in a place w/o seeing it IRL tho: that's how airbnb works. if you're smart about it you shouldn't really run into any largely negative surprises. search reviews to see if other people have had extended stays and what they say.

the only (potentially unexpected) things i'd say to be diligent about would be:

    • perception of space from photos. apartments can be really fuckin small. get an approximate area measurement so that you're not dealing with 1/3 of the space you're used to for 2-3 months.
    • storage space. if you're gonna bring a lot of clothes/items or buy a bunch of shit while there, make sure drawers/cabinets are there to store everything in.

Good food trumps clubs/denim daddy place proximity. This is mainly because we'll be there for awhile, so having to travel for those things isn't a problem. We'll likely only have time/energy for touristy vacation mode stuff on our days off.

To be more specific about our situation, my girlfriend and I teach online. This means we need two separate rooms in a neighborhood where people aren't likely to complain about noise in the morning (I mention this because I've read some neighbors are very touchy about hearing conversation through the walls). And since we'll be working 7AM-12PMish, our day-to-day routine will likely consist of walking around and eating. It's hard for us to be much pickier than that; we're both very excited to be staying *anywhere* in Tokyo.

    The help is sincerely appreciated!

edit: put more simply, we're definitely partial to "a bit residential"

  4. Does anyone have experience using airbnb in Tokyo? My girlfriend and I are looking to to stay there from September-November (we can do our jobs remotely), but it's hard taking the plunge on a place without seeing it beforehand.

Any neighborhood recommendations would also be very much appreciated. Neither of us have ever been to Japan before, so it's hard to choose.

  5. Does anyone know how to size on a pair of SC55s? I assume you'd go TTS as with 47s, Hawaiis, Okis, etc, but the 55s (somehow) seem an entirely different beast so all comments are welcome.

I haven't had my pair in 5+ years (I mistakenly gave them away to someone I now hate), but I wore a 32. Likewise, I'm currently wearing a size 32 in the 1947. I *think* the 55 is a slightly slimmer jean, weirdly enough.

  6. Yep, I would have thought you'd be swimming in the waist if you size up. Perhaps a stupid question, but have you tried a size 32 as a happy medium?

Ha, that's a great question. I should have clarified that BiG didn't have the 1101 in a size 32. They did have the 1105 in that size, though, and I thought the rise was a little low.

    Decisions, decisions..

PS Thanks to everyone who has responded so far!

  7. I know the common advice is to size down with FC, but has anyone tried sizing up? I think I'd prefer the rise on a size 33 1105/1 (I have very long legs), but I'm worried the waist being ludicrously big after some wear.

I've been able to squeeze into a OW size 31 1101, but they were uncomfortably tight and the fit sucked.

  8. What's considered normal for a quality resole?  If it's 350, the idea of getting nice boots as something cost-effective is even more of a joke (but hopefullly everyone here just buys the stuff because they like it).  I feel like 150 would be reasonable...

I'm pretty sure I paid Baker ~$150 for a full rebuild of my White's SD--a pair I've been wearing nearly every day for over five years.

Similarly, I'd get new soles from Eddie's in Sherman Oaks (including the cost of the sole itself) for just under a hundred. You *really* don't have to spend $350.
