  1. Hey folks—I haven't posted here in ages and I'm glad to see this forum still kicking.

Anyway, I have a decade-old pair of 1001XX jeans that I'd love to approximate with a new pair. Is the DD line my best bet? As far as I can tell, the 1001XX these days is quite slim, and even has a short, 4-

  2. Buzz Rickson Horsehide A2 Flight Jacket (40)

A horsehide A2 from Buzz Rickson (Aero repro), featuring near-pristine ribbing. It received only light wear and thus looks pretty fantastic. There's no damage on it whatsoever. Measurements were taken Self Edge style.

    Size: 40
    Chest: 43
    Length: 24
    Shoulders: 17.5

  3. I asked this a few pages back, but I figure I'd ask again because my trip is coming up:

can anyone recommend a neighborhood I've likely never been to? My girlfriend and I lived in Tokyo for 3 months last year, spending a lot of our time exploring. now, with two weeks on our hands, I want to find a few more worthwhile areas to check out. I'll take any recommendation, but we prefer weirder/older neighborhoods like Tateichi.

and we're staying in Koenji this time, if that helps.

  4. i wear everything on a 34 what size should i take on the buzz 50's?

A 34, probably. Unlike the SC 1947, the waist isn't tapered. My BR jeans are notably looser.

I'm looking forward to buying a second pair this fall! I really, really love these jeans. I'll have to take better photos l later on because my iPhone doesn't do the color/texture justice.

  5. Bobbo, how did you size yours? I know they redesigned or changed the sizing (labels) from the older models.

Do they now fit true to (western) size?

    Thanks.

PS Volvo & Bobbo - pictures or it didn't happen ;)

Wait, they're different now? I need to know more.

  6. If it was a resole with leather soles, I would wager most of that will go away with the break in.  New leather soles tend to be rather stiff, so even a small amount of tension in the sole attachment/stitching will be noticeable at first, and go away quite quickly with a bit of wear.

That's been my experience anyway, the first week is like 'oh I don't know if this went right' and after that everything evens out and you'll be back to where your comfort was before.  I've had that experience with 2-3 resoles on different shoes/boots.

This is a huge relief--thank you!

I've had boots resoled several times over the years, but I don't wear shoes often enough to have needed a resole until now.

  7. I just got my pair of Alden longwings resoled, and now they feel extremely weird. Granted, I had worn them down for ~4 years before getting them taken care of, so it stands to reason they'd feel comparatively rigid, but this doesn't seem right. It feels like the shoe is higher at the front end of the heel, keeping the shoe from sitting flush with the ground.

Does this sound normal to anyone? Everything *looks* even, so I'm hoping it's something that'll go away as I break them in again.

  8. Random question:

People who wash their jeans semi-regularly (~1 month, most of you I'm guessing!), did you always do that or did you used to wait longer? Particularly peeps in say 2010/2011.

It's kind of amazing now how many people wash almost like a normal person. I feel like in at least 2010/2011 (and probably before then), that just really wasn't a thing from what I remember and what I ended up doing.

My first jeans were iron heart, and I washed them the first time after about 6 months (hilarious how much my tastes have changed), and I remember thinking "this is kinda early to wash, but whatever". And I washed them in the bathtub! And I always never liked the way most jeans faded because they were too contrasty, which is why I got the IH. Flat Head jeans were the first ones I wrote off as never getting since it was always Thaj/Indonesian guys (and anyone else) posting these super obnoxiously faded jeans. And it just never occurred to me that there were so many jeans I'd like (or love and obsess over) that just had to be washed more than never.

Also, did you guys used to wash your jeans to get the shrink out? It seems like a lot of people do that now too, but I remember I always had jeans that would fit slim after a hot soak or something and I'd wear for a while, and then do wash them and they'd actually shrink and it'd turn to shit. Eventually I was so frustrated I said fuck it and washed them right away and it's been so much easier to size. Why was only soaking them the mantra when that's not how you shrink jeans ?

If what I remember is correct, it's crazy how much things have changed!

I've worn jeans with the intention of wearing them ~6 months before the first wash, but I could never make it more than 3 without the griminess driving me insane. And living with tmadd, who's been an advocate of frequent washing since at least '09, I've never been terribly afraid of washing my jeans "early."

In regard to pre-washing/soaking, I once had a pair of LVC 1947s that I had only ever hand washed. Then, after wearing them for ~6 months, I threw them in the machine and they became annoyingly tight. Now I almost always machine wash jeans before wearing them, even one-wash pairs.

I think people advocated/still advocate the soak for a few reasons. First, it does take care of a decent amount of shrinkage up front--and if you're only ever soaking them in the bathtub after wearing them for an extended period of time, you never really *have* to get all the shrink out. People were/are also very paranoid about losing starchiness/indigo (thereby compromising high contrast potential) so a soak was seen as the least abrasive way to dial in the fit.

  9. beer in japan sucks compared to america and decent craft beer is a lot more expensive than usa. craft heads is a decent craft beer bar in shibuya. there are some micro brew bars i went to but cant remember the name. beer wasnt worth the price.

i can't speak for microbrews or whatever, but Japan has my favorite cheap beers. orion, ebisu, kirin, etc...I love it all

  10. Those look fantastic! I'd kill to have that fabric on the 47 cut.

edit: During my time working at Self Edge, that SC 12 oz denim was always the most impressive fabric to see come in for repairs. That shit is gorgeous.

  11. i don't really know what the appeal of visiting osaka is.

granted i've only been there for a brief period of time, it's a shitty place for sightseeing

    1) I don't really know of any stores that are better than their counterparts in Tokyo. Sure, there are some stores that do stand out like Silver+Gold, and Loftman

    2) Extreme shortage of hotels. There are very few convenient accomodations central to where you want to hang out.

    3) clubs and bars close early

    4) food and drinks in general are less expensive out there. also, there are some exotic "konamono" (it's an umbrella term for anything made with flour e.g. okonomiyaki) that are otherwise hard to find outside of osaka. other than that, there's not much else.

idk, there's something neat/weird about osaka. it's hard to recommend if you're in Japan for a short trip, but my girlfriend and i really enjoyed the city as a detour on a longer stay in tokyo. shinsekai is cool.

edit: we're heading back to tokyo for two weeks in november, and i'm looking for stuff to see/do that we wouldn't have already thought of. We had three months to explore last time, but I'm sure there are still some worthwhile neighborhoods we haven't seen yet.

  12. I'm going to Stockholm for a week in September, but I will likely be working for most of each day (unfortunately!). Where should I be spending my evenings? Not looking for clubs, but bars, cafes, etc.--anything open after 5. I want to see as much of the city as possible while I'm there under these somewhat limited circumstances.
