  1. I need some help deciding what size I need.

So, I'm going to get another pair of 50s jeans. I've got a pair of 34's. Theyre pretty baggy and I'd like to get another pair to wear as a slimmer fit. I measure 33 at the waist, I'm wearing 32 Sugar Cane 1947s right now.

The Denimio measurements for size 32 one wash look like they'd be something that would work, but when comparing the 34 measurements to my pair of 34s the measurements seem more like raw measurements; which makes me want to get a 33 to be safe.

I'd like to know what a raw pair of 32s measure, so if anyone out there has any measurements from raw or any other advice that'd be awesome.

  2. Interest Check

    Size Small 50's boys jacket

Got this for my wife. Its a little tight, thought it might work out. its not working out. I can post some pictures if anyone is interested in it. Its really cool, just a little snug. Just lookin to sell it for enough money to exchange it.

    Pit to Pit - 16 3/4"

    Back shoulder seam - 14 3/8"

Sleeve from top of shoulder  - 21 7/8"

Back Length Collar seam to bottom - 20"

  3. I'm pretty sure my farmer ranchers were purchased after the change in owner ship and i have no issues with them. Also my brother has a pair and they look fine. that doesnt help much seeing as how you want them shorter and in horsehide.

White's? Haven't bought a pair yet since the change in ownership. Also they won't do a shorter engineer or do it in horsehide, which bugs me because they make other boots in horse.

  4. I realized I never posted any pictures of when I got my Semi Dress boots back from resole. They were single leather soled and they finally had worn a small hole in the big toe area; so I sent them back to white's for resole. I was kinda surprised when I got them back - they came back with only one row of stitching. I called white's asking them what was up with that - they just said thats how they do resoles. They just always have 1 row of stitching. I guess its just the process and I guess why you hear that its best to get the double row cause there is more room to work with. Here are the pics. I think these are about 4 years old and are brown chromexcel and were resoled with double leather this time.

  5. ^ That's pretty. Great pick up.

Here are my R.M. Williams custom boots in camel. 5 years. 1 resole.

They are my favourite shoes. More so than White's, Alden, Tricker's, Viberg's, etc.

Camel is so much tougher than cattlehide and even horsehide. Incredible really.

By the way, RM Williams custom cost has gone up heaps since being bought by Loius Vuitton - $800 AUD base price now!!!

Those look fantastic Mike. I've always loved the way RM Williams looked but have been too afraid to buy - never being sure of how to size and having had so much trouble with sizing in the past. I'll be going to NYC next month, maybe I'll swing by the RM williams store and see if they can help me. Its a shame about the custom cost; how custom is RMs custom? is it just leather selection or do they do foot tracings etc...

edit: nevermind - the NYC store is closed forever. What the hell...

  6. did you send in a tracing to either White's or Bakers?

I'm asking because if you did they should be able to work it out with you. I know that sucks, but I'm sure you'll be happy in the end.

Whites arrived, and they're a good half size to big. I went with a slimmer last (bounty hunter from standard) with same measurements. To say I am upset would be pretty accurate.

  7. Also, I'm trying to get another pair of these. Was thinking of going down a size or two on the 50s and wearing without a cuff. Can we still order these things from ed? I've noticed his shop is called signet now. I felt like working through him was easy and I'd do it again. paging ed??

  8. Yeah. When White's does a resole its kind of a big deal. It's expensive and you lose the second row of stitching; which I really like.

    ^^

Yeah, unfortunately, the 430 is the weakest link.

IMO, it's counterintuitive__ boot build this tough, one shouldn't be looking for a resole for, at least, 3yrs of normal wear, right!? ... I do understand that there are instances that slip resistant rubber soles are a necessity.

  9. I was curious about the composition of the 430; thanks for clearing that up. I've bot it on a pair of white's and WWII Impressions rough out boots and I've blown through them. I like the grip the 430 provides but I don't think its an equal trade off for how short lived they are.

Both are slip resistant__ 700 is more durable cuz it's composite, while 430 is rubber.

Too bad White's don't offer Goodyear Commandos w/c are also composite__ from personal experience, they are even longer-lasting than the 700s cuz the sole grips elevate the bottom sole stitching. My oldest commandos are over 5y/o & not a single broken stitch @bottom. Here's to compare wear:

GoodYear Commando: Composite :: Trickers @5yrs+, Viberg @2yrs+, Viberg NEW
    9AAA387B-4C71-406D-9BB5-2AE2D56E3EEF.jpg

    Vibram 705: Composite Half-soles :: White's SD__ less than 2yrs effective wear

Cat's Paw on LoneWolf: Rubber__ like on the 430 :: less than a year of effective wear.

  10. this is all true, but the price increase could technically be justified cause they started using leather liner. I bought mine in 2007 and they came with the cambrelle lining - which sucks. There were also internet claims I had read about them upping the foot balance line to Alden New England standards which are apparently higher.

that being said I've seen recent 405s and can't say they're any better than my foot balance 405s and I probably wouldn't have bought my 405s in 2007 if they cost me $584. I paid $275 and I wouldn't pay more than that even today.

A semi-custom pair of Wesco's, White's or Nick's will about the same price as Alden's and better quality, IMO, and less expensive than Viberg.

Viberg is in the same league as and has the same roots as Wesco, White's & Nick's, and their prices are much higher for no apparent reason.

I wasn't familiar with Alden until hanging out here. I've tried on the Indy's, and while they certainly are nice, the fake toe stitching drives me crazy - can't stand it, but that's just me. I've since learned that it wasn't that long ago - like maybe 5 years ago - that the Indy was selling for around $305. Now they are $535+ for the same exact boot. Saying all that, I do really like the Cordovan version, with a real hand stitched toe, and their Tru Balance last is very awesome.

+1 to what Gnomes said about Redwing - prolly the best buy for the $$$.

In your neck of the woods, I'd also recommend looking into Sagara and Santalum - truly hand made boots in Indonesia. Also, if you can order from Japan, look into Toys McCoy. Their Surveyor boot is the cream of the crop, in my book. Never seen them in person, and they may have glued-on ribbing (don't know), but knowing how the Japanese are so fanatical about quality craftsmanship, these look amazing in all the pics I've been looking at.
