  1. alright. but i sorta do need the keychains lol; my school is laptop-oriented but it sucks because we have to pay for our laptops without a possibility of opting out to buy our own laptops

so every student has the same laptop, and they give you a backpack, and it's really the only one that fits the laptop well plus still having room for other stuff, and basically the keychains are so i know which bag at the front of the lecture hall is mine during exams

even if it is to serve a functional purpose, surely you can find other sensible looking keychains or means to customise your bag. try tying some leather strips around the strap or something.

  2. and to completely satisfy my craving for some good ol singaporean food, we had to hit the food court and coffee shops for plebeian eating at its best.

    img7297gm8.jpg

hokkien prawn noodles. flavourful - you can taste that it's been fried with sufficient heat in the wok! (wok-hei is a difficult concept to translate)

    img7299ui5.jpg

paper prata (this was really good. super thin, practically crumbles in your hand as you break it off)

    img7301ao2.jpg

mee goreng (muslim indian fried noodles) and sirap limau (rose syrup drink with lime)

  3. ^i know right! it's fascinating just to discover each detail. makes me wish i tried every single original confectionary that the miniatures are modeled after!

anyways. back to the island. and had to celebrate with some local food.

    img8399ama8.jpg

sambal kangkong vegetables, caramelised baby squids, stir fried fish with spring onion and ginger.

and what better than what we are famous for:

    img8404ape7.jpg

chilli crab, with deep fried buns. 1.6kg worth of crabs, only for 3 people! shiok!

  4. So the macaroons at Pierre Herme were heavenly, but we couldn't bring any back for mum - but to my great delight, I found these miniatures, made to scale (1/12) and with great details, sold exclusively at Pierre Herme. The fact that my mum is already an avid collector of japanese food miniatures just makes this a perfect early mother's day gift.

    img8407aqb4.jpg

the paper bag in the back ground of the photo, is the actual sized paper bag used at Pierre Herme.

    img8413aib9.jpg

    img7285yr0.jpg

it's hard to capture all the details on camera, but even the individual macaroons can be taken out of the plastic box. this is so for the tiny chocolate pieces as well.

  5. i may be mistaken, but is this in daiknayma (alittle before the opposite side of supreme)? did you eat at the italian place that serves great spareribs?

yep location is as tweeds mentioned. that said, i liked the daikanyama and naka meguro areas the best. didn't know about the italian place though! darn! (was it affordable though?)

  6. i got these for 12,495 yen. i'm not sure where they might have them online, although i've just been told they've been spotted at a local sneaker store too, though i'm not sure what sizes are available.

  7. wait lah.. are those some hi top purcells soepom?

yep. hi top purcells, with subtle beige snake skin patterned print at the sides. converse 100th anniversary edition. or at least i think that's what the salesperson at ABC was trying to tell me...

  8. had to buy a phone just before the trip because i realised that i needed a 3G phone for japan. thankfully i was long overdue for an upgrade anyways.

it was somewhat depressing that i couldn't afford most of the ladies apparel that caught my eye there. and there didn't seem to be anything that appealed to my aesthetics in the mid-range. uniqlo was a major disappointment. the women's wear this season was frumpy, and female UT designs were ugly.

so i picked up mostly basics from uniqlo, muji and a couple of things that were on sale from small boutiques.

  9. remember to go to Lawson's (convenience store chain) and buy the ticket from the automated machine soon as you arrive in tokyo (limited pax allowed per session per day, and you *have* to have a ticket before you get there) - the thing is, instructions are all in jap on the machine. print the instructions in english from the website before going if you can. we had help from the shop assistant, who was really sweet, but it took us quite awhile to explain what it was that we wanted.

  10. ^ tweeds is out teaching, but yes, it was at the ghibli museum. no phototaking allowed inside. this photo was at the rooftop garden. :)

the museum was awesome. small, but it takes you into the world behind the animations. i loved the whole vibe of the building, the stained glass featuring characters from the animations, and the monthly exclusive short film is also really sweet. the only disappointment was the museum shop - we found more totoro paraphernalia in tokyo stores, than at the museum.

  11. if he was diddy, he sure as hell didn't introduce himself properly! that cat was one of the main organiser for swing dance events in tokyo.

and someone else asked in a rep, why so many people were wearing stripes - i'm not sure, but i suspect it might have something to do with the sailor uniform look, which is commonly associated with the dance. there were lots of ladies who were dressed up in vintage 1940s/50s look for the event (but i don't know if tweeds has photos of them)

  12. upon plongin's recommendation for good fast food burgers, we tried Lotteria:

    img8125awn6.jpg

the Zeppin burger was pretty good, as was the house standard

i love that you can get yakult from vending machines in tokyo. in fact, i love that you can get anything in vending machines!

    img8128aci4.jpg

miso soup with clams at another kaiten sushi place (but were so ravenous we didnt stop to photograph the rest of the stuff)

    img8341arj1.jpg

at Pronto Cafe, chain of "italian" cafes (i like jap-ified italian food)

    img8321awh8.jpg

    eggplant and ham

    img8319asm1.jpg

carbonara with a half-boiled egg (which gives the pasta a great texture)

    late night supper:

    img8102aor5.jpg

special seasonal (spring-only) cup noodles. with little sakura fishcakes!

singapore airlines plane food on the way home:

    img8349afn3.jpg

    img8343aqk9.jpg

    it was really pretty tasty.

  13. that nutella toast looks too good....

okay i got the pics from tweeds. we had to eat cheap cos all our dough went to shopping. but it was not bad anyways! (sorry so many pics have my face in it - i was being a tourist.)

    img8147awo9.jpg

    pierre herme macaroons

the one i'm eating is chicken skin yakitori. yep. nothing but skewered chicken skin...

    img8184acr7.jpg

    japanese rice crackers. huge ass!

    img8187acd6.jpg

at a noodle restaurant in Yokohama

    img8225ajj2.jpg

bukakke noodles! couldn't stop laughing about it

    img8224aqk5.jpg

  14. here're the few pics i've got on my camera

singapore airlines plane food is really not bad:

    planefood1tg4.jpg

    planefood2xh4.jpg

kaiten sushi was really affordable, and pretty good by my plebeian standards. tried some varieties of seafood that we don't normally get back home (couldn't photograph most of it because there were just too many plates and too little space):

    img7221za9.jpg

    img7222cx1.jpg

then there's the requisite convenience store purchases (late night suppers and lunch respectively)

    img7228zs7.jpg

    img7233rx7.jpg

  15. comme des garcons parfums tee, size S (i'm usually a size SS). love the blackbird print, but it sits a tad loose on me (plus i've bought a new cdg tee from tokyo so...)

    only worn twice.
