  1. the perfect day for a picnic is when everybody else is working.

today, soepom prepared the simple spread:

    wayet0523ahb0.jpg

peach yoghurt, guava juice, cherries, sandwiches

    wayet0532biv9.jpg

focaccia with butter, lingonberry jam, melty cheddar cheese, alfafa sprouts, tomatoes and honey baked ham

    dinner at home:

mum bought some dishes back which we had with porridge. hurray for singapore, home to cheap and tasty food.

  2. yes, i think we're conspiciously aware of the corruption in Burma - which is why various agencies are insisiting sending aid in the form of non-monetary food items. on the conditions of delivering/ distributing them without the military's intervention. We can only hope they succeed.

But if those are your only deterrents, then donate to Sichuan.

Here's a link to a track called Force Field , which a Swedish vocalist/ experimental vocal artiste (Motoko Ishii ) felt inspire to add her vocals to, based on one of the tracks from the aforementioned albums my friend released.

If you like the track, or felt it moved you... please lend a hand.

  3. the situation is dire in both regions.

in myanmar, cyclone nargis caused "catastrophic destruction, and at least 80,000 fatalities with a further 56,000 people still missing"

"The recent Sichuan Earthquake in China had shocked the world. With more than 28,000 dead and more than 190,000 injured and many homeless"

there are many avenues through which you can donate. but inertia gets the better of too many of us. here's one way you can help - a friend of mine (an outstanding local sound designer and composer) has produced 2 albums of electronic-acoustic music, one for each of the areas met with calamity. both albums are available for free downloading but we urge you to donate, however little. and to spread the word.

proceeds go to the British Red Cross (too much red tape with the Singapore Red Cross apparently...) and will then be redirected to the areas in need.

you can access SonicBrat's blog and the donation site here:

or the direct link to the donation sites are:

    Myanmar:

    Sichuan, China:

the donating process is easier than kopping something from ebay.

I've also participated in another charity recording for the cause. But since that won't be available for sale internationally, and since it really doesn't matter why or how you are donating, as long as some help goes out, I hope you'll support this effort by my friend.

It's hard to watch the news. Hundreds of children have had their limbs amputated because of injuries. Too many are dead. I'm no philanthropist. But I could do without some little luxuries. Most of us could.

  4. thorough - what's ethiopian food like? i've never tried. but from the photo, it looks a little like northern indian food. does it taste similar? the sambusa dish looks like the indian samosa too.

anyways. lunch at home for 2 days in a row!

    hotpot/ teppanyaki

and then enjoying some of the snacks brought back from the trip:

    wayet1517ctq5.jpg

my absolutest favouritest japanese snack. we have these imported to singapore but only in the larger sized version. these japan-only miniatures have a better texture and taste i swear! i think i brought back all the convenience store had in stock.

    lunch today:

    wayet0519box9.jpg

some dish always gets forgotten to be served till halfway through the meal - today it was the eggplant.

  5. ^ nothing much to "know". i think it's just a matter of being open to trying new types of food and allowing yourself to be more aware of what you're tasting. start with experimenting what combinations of foods go well together in a simple sandwich!

eg. i like: alfafa with cheese, spicy pork floss (an asian way of preparing pork, making it dry and powdery) and tomatoes/ grilled aubergines

anyways. dinner with a friend today:

    wayet0513amv3.jpg

assorted sashimi. i really liked how they presented it (can't tell from the pic, but it was a really tall bowl of shaved ice) of course, i wouldn't have minded more sashimi in proportion to the ice... but it looked nice so i'll let it pass...

    wayet0513bkd1.jpg

my favourite from here - kaki bacon yaki (oysters baked with bacon and spinach)

    wayet0513chi3.jpg

    gindara teriyaki. cod fish.

    dessert!

    wayet0513dxf7.jpg

guava sorbet which was pretty good! i should've gone with a cup instead of the cone though. the cone was too sweet - spoiled the lightness of the sorbet.

  6. at my favourite sheesha place:

    wayet0509aep3.jpg

bukhari chicken with special spiced rice

    wayet0509bnh8.jpg

tweeds had crispy chicken with rice. it looks black and unappetising. but it's good.

    haven't had mum's cooking in a while:wayet0510amb9.jpg

desserts at work this afternoon (didn't get photos of the rest of the buffet):

    wayet0511axd5.jpg

mother's day, and mum felt like crab again, so we trotted down to the new seafood restaurant that opened next to our place. it's a godsend:

    wayet0511bfj5.jpg

young coconut, pork rib king (honey glazed pork ribs), 佛泼瓢香 (i don't know how to translate this... it's not a descriptive name, but a metaphorical name) - essentially, it's mixed vegetables, cashew, chicken and prawn, in a nest made of flaky yam paste.

    wayet0511cfm2.jpg

black pepper crab. just one big one, and it weighed 1.5kg!

imagine two small azn women ate all that.

  7. nope. i've done worse. have you seen my earlier waywts?

no airplane sounds lah. not this time anyways... this one was a fluke. i was getting out of another cutesy pose, thinking that the self timer was done.
